The Crusades

This German-to-English translation of a highly successful book is a clear, approachable, student-friendly introduction to the history of the crusades.

With a long chronological span, from the eleventh to the late fifteenth century, and with a wide geographical coverage of the whole of Europe and some of the Middle East, The Crusades is clear, concise and more wide-ranging than most single-volume works. Chapters on the military orders and the history of the crusader states illustrate the impact of the crusades on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea. The book takes both Christian and Islamic viewpoints into account and sets the crusades in the larger framework of European expansion in the Middle Ages.

Providing a fine overview of the crusade movement and taking recent scholarship into account, Nikolas Jaspert uses boxes, case studies, marginal directions and chronologies to make each chapter very easy to follow. Students at all university levels will find The Crusades to be an invaluable historical resource.

Nikolas Jaspert is a Professor of Medieval History at Ruhr-Universitt Bochum. He is widely published on the crusades, on the history of the Iberian Peninsula and on religious orders in the Middle Ages.

Phyllis G. Jestice is Associate Professor of Medieval and Early Modern European History at the University of Southern Mississippi. She is a highly experienced translator and has recently completed translations of Whalen Lai and Michael von Brcks Christianity and Buddhism (2001) and Gerd Althoffs Otto III (2003).

Authors foreword

The crusadesor, more properly, what has been associated with them whether justly or unjustlyhave again become a central issue in recent years. The term crusade is threatened with loss of clear definition in public discourse, which is reason enough to issue a survey of the crusades. Not that there arent already rigorously scholarly presentations. But for a long time there has been no short, scholarly handbook in the German language. The work that lies before you differs in approach from some earlier studies. It approaches the theme systematically as well as chronologically and also gives considerable emphasis to placing the phenomenon in the context of the history of ideas. In each chapter a primary source is showcased that elucidates the essential features of the section and invites the reader to deeper exploration of the text.

This book lays no claim to be an original contribution to the decades-long debate over what constitutes a crusade. For a long time there have been two schools of thought on this question: the first regards only expeditions to the Near East as crusades, while the second advocates a broader definition that also encompasses other regions. This volume follows a middle path. Crusades are understood to be all campaigns against enemies of the faith and the Church that were called by popes and included the promise of an indulgence. Thus the book includes expeditions against heretics, Muslims on the Iberian Peninsula, and the pagans of the Baltic region. But it also takes into account the fact that contemporaries regarded campaigns in the Near East as superior in importance, and it was these expeditions that had the power to mobilize people to the greatest degree. For that reason, the Near Eastern crusades receive special emphasis in this overview.

Besides the scholars whose research findings have been brought together into this synthesis, many others have contributed to the creation of this volume. Dr Nikolaus Btcher, Professor Marie-Luise Favreau-Lilie, Matthias Maser, Dr Johannes Pahlitzsch, Dr Andreas Rther, and Professor Dieter Wei read all or parts of the manuscript. Their suggestions improved the work immeasurably, for which I give sincere thanks to them all. I am also indebted to Mr Ren Hurtienne for his help in producing the maps as well as Ms Gabriele Gumbel and Verena Artz for their painstaking editorial work. Special thanks are due to my students at Erlangen, who tested out the books suitability for university use and, with their suggestions for cuts, helped with the most difficult task of allstaying within the prescribed bounds of 160 printed pages. The books shortcomings remainas alwaysthe authors responsibility. This volume is dedicated to my wife Montse and our sons David, Lucas, and Theo.

Authors foreword to the English edition

At first sight, it might seem surprising that a German book on the Crusades be translated into English, given the considerable amount of excellent syntheses on the subject published in the United States of America and in the United Kingdom in the course of the last two decades. Indeed, this volume is greatly indebted to these works and to British historiography of the Crusades in general. However, I hope the reader will find sufficient other academic strands and schools of thought to justify the effort that went into rendering this study into English.

My thanks go to Alan Murray for his part in bringing about this translation, to the efficient crew at Routledge, particularly to Philippa Grand and Eve Setch, and most of all to Phyllis G. Jestice for the immense work she put into converting the original version into readable and comprehensible English.

Since the first edition of this book appeared in Germany in 2003, I have received some observations and suggestions, which I have been able to incorporate into this edition; I would like to express my gratitude to Hans Eberhard Mayer as pars pro toto for his helpful remarks and annotations. Like all overviews, this synopsis rests on the work and toil of many men and women whose research has here been condensed into a slim volume; the concise bibliography at the end of this book can only give a vague idea how much it is indebted to them.
