Preface
In these times, our culture's familiar myth has lost its vitality. The immense crises we face raise questions which find no answer from that spiritual level. This book is an examination of how great myths have been born in the course of history, and what the trend of human development has been as seen through them. For myth is at the heart of historical development.
The way we lost our myth is familiar. We now live in a cosmos quite different from that of our forefathers. No longer can we have the comfort of knowing ourselves as God's special creation, descended from Adam, and inhabiting a world that was his unique masterpiece. No longer is it taking the middle position in a three-storied universe, between a heaven to be won and a hell to receive us if we fail the test of our sojourn here in this proving ground. Instead we look out upon the staggering vastness of a seemingly endless crowd of galaxies composed of countless suns and planetary systems, and recognize our earth as a minuscule speck among them. We have appeared to shrink incredibly in our estimation of our value in this new scale of creation. Yet there awaits us a far grander mythic rendering of our place in all this, one that can stir the heart even more deeply than the one we have outgrown.
