Preface
In an age of rapid globalization, it is not surprising that historians' interests are turning toward the international and intercultural aspects of history. Having studied abroad and run an international house with the explicit goal of strengthening intercultural understanding, I share these concerns. Therefore, this book is the result of both my personal interests and a new professional focus on intercultural history.

In the Atlantic system, several formerly neglected issues such as the African slave trade have taken on new importance and have energized the discipline. However, the evidence of this book suggests that nothing comparable to an Atlantic system existed in the Pacific in the later period. One of the impediments to a Pacific system was the rise of nationalism in the nineteenth century across the Pacific, which this volume docu-
