This book is dedicated to my beautiful wife, Dardi. Your love for our children as well as the children who enter our lives hurting and lost is a model for which this book stands on. Thanks for doing the most important job there is: being a parent.

You are my best friend You are everything to me.

Love, Joe

Why wounded? I have been involved with alternative education for most of my professional career ranging from teaching at juvenile lock-up facilities to being an alternative school principal. Through my many years of attending conferences and training sessions, the word at-risk has been used. I agree that there are many at-risk children in our society, but it became increasingly clearer to me that we are missing a real issue: Many of these children are not at-risk anymore. They are wounded. Their deep scars of emotional, physical, and mental pain are stuffed deep inside because, as a society, we are led to believe that they will go away.

As will be discussed in the book, I believe that some of the scars that our students are dealing with are internal, and they need to be brought to the surface because that is one of the ways to help reach wounded children. Once the scars are brought to the surface and dealt with, we can begin to reach these students at both emotional and cognitive levels.

This type of reaching out is uncomfortable for everyone because a lot of what comes to the surface is painful to hear, let alone deal with. However, it is essential for the healing process to start. Whatever your role in a childs education, understand that we all can be used as change agents to reach these students.

It is also important to realize that deep hurts affect every community, every state, and every nation regardless of race, gender, or economic status. It has no limits, not even age. Every-one has dealt with wounds in their life to some degree. It is how we respond to these wounds that takes us to a level of learning or despair. Like an emergency room physician, it is critical to deal with the wounds that cannot be ignored. This is not a time for prevention or evaluation but a time for action, and we must be well-trained and prepared. Someone once asked me what I am selling when I speak at seminars and my answer was sim-ple: HOPE.

Joe Hendershott, who resides in Ashland, Ohio, is a graduate of the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and holds a masters degree in school administration from Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. His career spans more than 20 years as a teacher and school administrator.

Joe has an extensive background dealing with difficult and troubled youth in the school system. He has been a high school assistant principal, head principal, alternative school principal, and principal at Boys Village School. Currently, Joe is the director of field experiences for the Schar College of Education at Ashland University where he also conducts professional development workshops designed to educate and empower those working with wounded children.

Joe and his wife, Dardi, are also cofounders of Hope 4 The Wounded, LLC (www.hope4thewounded.org), a consulting firm that targets working with wounded children and how to get them to academically achieve through various programs that include esteem building and emotional development. Joe has presented at national educational conferences as well as staff trainings. Joe speaks with passion about understanding the wounded students in our schools, and his diverse background gives him a unique perspective on this topic.

Our Vision: We believe that all children are valuable and can achieve their full potential when they are esteemed and empowered by grace, love and hope.

Our Mission: We desire to equip, empower and encourage those who are called to work with the broken and the lost children in this world.

I would like to thank some special people for their influence and encouragement during this journey. Without your inspiration, this book would not have been possible.

To my children Kaelee, Kearsten, Kameryn, Kyler, and Kade: Seeing your joy for life and that each of you have your own special gifts to give this world inspires me and blesses others. I am forever proud to call you my children. Thanks for giving our time for this book.

To Punkie: You are a blessing.

To our foster children: Know that you have enriched my life and continue to stretch and teach me about the wounded chil-dren in our world. You will always have a forever family in our home.
