Beloved FriendFrom joy all beings come, in joy all
Beings live, to joy all beings return. TAITTIRIYA UPANISHAD With this book, Andrew Harvey has provided a long-awaited and much-needed gifta book of prayers. People need to pray and many, surprisingly, do not know how. Aside from petition or emergency prayers, they have no experience of the bliss that one finds in the daily practice of reflecting upon illuminated words that draw you inward, away from the distractions of ordinary life. Prayer is power. That is a simple way to define the nature of prayer.
I came to appreciate the power of prayer during the time that I wrote Entering the Castle, a book about the mystical teachings of St. Teresa of vila. I had always considered myself to be someone who lived a prayerful life, but it wasnt until I delved into the writings of this great saint that I grappled with what it meant to withdraw from one state of consciousness in order to enter into a much deeper place of silence. Teresa described this place as ones interior castleher metaphor for the soul. She said that entry into your soul requires prayer. Your mind is an insufficient instrument when it comes to gaining access to the higher planes of consciousness.
You must pray your way in. I found her guidance intriguing, and so I followed it. Day after day I concentrated on praying, at first with great mental determinationnot petition prayer, but devotional. I followed a practice of hers in which I reflected upon a mystical teaching and waited for something to happen. Like what? you may wonder. I guess I was waiting for what she described as an experience of quietude.
In other words, I was trying to force a mystical experience. Finally, I gave up and just maintained a prayer practice. After a few months, I noticed that something had shifted in me. It wasnt a dramatic shift, as if Id had an epiphany and suddenly knew my life needed to go in a different direction. Rather, the changes I felt were deeply and richly internal, subtle in their expression in keeping with the delicate nature of grace. I noticed, for example, that I had a sense of calm pulsating inside of me that was slightly contrary to my high-strung nature.
