Preface
Each year, a growing number of people have come to realize that no amount of behavioral-science theory will allow us to produce a humane society if such theory is devoid of a humane foundation. And belatedly these same people have come to realize that Christianity is a humane foundation for human relations. Each year, millions of Americans spend billions of dollars and countless hours trying to find peace with themselves and with God. In retrospect, it is clear to me that an excellent starting point is an enlightened study of Scripture.
In an effort to bridge the gap between behavioral-science theories and Judaeo-Christian doctrines, I have elected to focus on the works of ancient and contemporary writers. Although my selection of writers is limited, I believe my point is made: there is much in the Bible that supports our efforts to build a truly humane nation. Indeed, some of the most sophisticated new scientific pronouncements are merely variations of old Judaeo-Christian themes. Of course, a similar case could be made for other religions Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Taoism, and Confucianism as they relate to human relationships.

I am aware that racial segregation, sexism, poverty, and war have been supported by individual and group interpretations of Scripture. With this in mind, I am not encouraging an analysis of religious tenets in order to disrupt human relationships. Instead, this book is written for students and teachers, lay persons, clergy anyone interested in improving interpersonal and intergroup relationships.
I am indebted to many persons for their encouragement and counsel. My gratitude goes to Kenneth Beaver, George Brennen, Dorothy Dittmar, Nancy Freebairn, Patrick Furfari, Robert Hailey, Evans Moore, John Shaw, and Donald Wiggins for their excellent suggestions. Special thanks go to Norma Banks and Ellen Blyden for their contribution to Chapter 1.
It is my hope that I have contributed to bridging the gap between academe and community practices. Above all else, I encourage you to improve upon this small volume.
