Preface
Jesus: But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth. (John 4:23-24)
Paul: May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom. 15:5-6)
Jesus, a Jew, responds to a controversial question asked by a Samaritan woman about where people should worship if it were to be done properly. In the Gospel of John (4:20), she states: "Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that..." Jesus' response was not likely what she wanted to hear. Jesus' reply took the discussion in the direction of the what and the why rather than the how or the where. Jesus put his finger on a very sensitive spot, for neither locale nor cultural concerns are important God looks for people who "worship the Father in spirit and truth." In our churches today, we have been caught up with concerns similar to those of the woman at the well, and that is probably due to the fact that we have in our congregations people of diverse cultural backgrounds or those who simply have very different views of worship. Simple solutions are not easily found.
