To my grandson, who taught us all to live life to the fullest and to love, laugh, and enjoy each day, no matter what challenges we face. Jason was a brave young man whose last message to us was thanking us for the loving care and protection we provided for him.

CONTENTS

Make your own Bible. Select and collect all those words and sentences that in all your reading have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.

RALPH WALDO EMERSON (18031882),
AMERICAN WRITER AND LEADER OF THE TRANSCENDENTALIST MOVEMENT

In January 2018, Bobbie Siegel, my soul mate and wife of 63 years, died. Over the following months, I began to sort through the copious stacks of notebooks and pieces of paper that one collects in a lifetime. I found many of the letters, interviews, notes, and sayings that had supported me in the past. Each time I read them, I was filled with wonder because they were still pertinent, still fresh and meaningful to me today. Rediscovering these valuable pieces of wisdom motivated me to write this book to share with you the mysteries and miracles of life, death, and beyond.

I agree with Emerson. Everybody should create a personal Biblea life manual I have come to refer to as a Bible IIfrom such words and phrases that trumpet truth, love, and hope. After all, when you buy a new appliance, you get a service manual to help you use it properly and care for it. Why not have a manual for living, loving, healing, and growing? We can make one for ourselves by seeking wise words from those whove already soughtand foundanswers to lifes mysteries. Creating your own life manual gives you the opportunity to choose the sayings that speak loudest to you and that suit your unique nature. It becomes something that can grow with you over a lifetime and help you to absorb lifes lessons.

We have teachers and coaches all around us. I learned, for example, that my family, colleagues, patients, medical students, and friends are all my teachers. Some of my best guideposts for living and growing were found in poetry, lectures, books, and articles. I knew the words were important when they seemed to jump off the page as if theyd been waiting for me to discover them. At other times the lyrics of a song or lines in a play felt like God was speaking directly to me, guiding me and answering my questions. Ive also found that if you want to know the truth about life, you should read literary fiction. The great authors create characters who teach us wisdom through their actions, growth, and transformation. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung, playwright and storyteller William Saroyan, and spiritual scientist Ernest Holmes are three of my favorite teachers, whose wisdom I will share using several of their quotes.

My journey of understanding has taken many paths, from science and philosophy to spirituality and literature, from relationships with family, patients, and others to communion with God, guides, and angels. All these paths have merged into my lifes work. When I speak of communicating with God, I am aware that some people dont feel comfortable with the word or the concept of God. Let me just explain that my definition of God is this: A Loving, Intelligent, and Conscious Energy. The first letters spell ALICE. Some refer to God as the Universe, Great Spirit, Allah, the Creator, or another name, but feel free, if it suits you, to just use ALICE. It doesnt matter what term you choose, as no word suffices for that which isnt nameable. The important thing to remember is that Gods mind and humanitys mind are both parts of The One Mind. We need to connect to our greater consciousnessour Higher Selvesand realize it within us. Until we see it in everything and everywhere, it is difficult, if not impossible, to grasp the big picture, to understand what life is about and why were all here. So slow down and take time to feel the presence within. Take time to read, observe, and listen.

In 1986, I wrote my first book in the hope that I could change the way people thought about health, disease, healing, and medicine. I integrated psychology, spirituality, and mysticism with practical medicine in order to help people to adopt a wholeness approach, a mind-body-spirit form of healing. Modern medical thinking at that time separated the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of people, without any overlap. We had specialists who had no idea of you, their patient, as an integrated creation. They saw you as a mechanical entity and fixed the part that wasnt working by giving you a pill or doing a procedure versus treating the holistic issue. While things have improved in many ways, each generation still needs to learn the lessons of mind-body-spirit healing and carry them into future generations.
