This book is dedicated to the future generation, in hopes that we, the current generation, find the courage and will to create a prosperous future world.
The two of us started our lives with less than most. Ray went from an abusive childhood home to a tumultuous young adulthood to finding his own way in the world as an adult. He ultimately turned his life around, only to see all his success and hard work snatched away again by a real estate crash and recession. Jess worked hard in college and ended up graduating with a marketing degree. She checked off all the boxes, did everything she was supposed to do, and still was at the mercy of corporate politics and vindictive managers. It wasnt a bad work ethic, or ignorance on our parts, that stood between us and success in the corporate world. We simply learned the hard way that no matter how hard we worked, if we were working for someone else, our lives would never truly be in our own hands.
We knew that working for other people meant that we would always be at someone elses beck and call, that we would be using our skills and experience to make money for someone else, and that they could let us go and leave us with little recourse. We knew that if we wanted to take control of our future and live the lives we wanted for ourselves and our families, we had to take charge of our careers. As soon as Ray was presented with the chance to go into sales for himself, it seemed obvious. Starting our own business and working to grow it would be the only way we could get the security and dependability that every person on this planet deserves and should have, though far too few actually do.
Especially now. As we were writing this book in early 2020, news of layoffs and rising unemployment was flooding the airwaves. At times like this, it is more important than ever to be able to support yourself on your own terms. When companies shutter and the stock market falls, more and more people realize that the loyalty to the job they had for 10 or 15 or 20 years doesnt matter if there is no longer an office to go to or a job to do. Being your own boss, calling your own shots, and writing your own destiny is a powerful way to take control of how you live and how you provide for your family.
Ray learned this back in 2008 when the real estate business he painstakingly built was yanked out from under him, leaving him with over a million dollars in debt. Jess learned this when she saw how easily her boss sabotaged her efforts at her first job out of college. Travel agents learned this when Expedia.com launched. Brick-and-mortar booksellers learned this when Amazon.com became the first online bookseller. Blockbuster learned this when Netflix started sending out those red envelopes. Job security means less and less as each year passes, whether it is because of a new invention or a new disease.
While the times in which were writing this book have brought this lesson front and center, we have really been seeing this shift for a while now. The way we communicate, conduct business, spend money, and earn our income has changed. And we have to change with it. Sure, blaming the system, or a bad boss, or the stock market, or the government may feel good for a minute, but it doesnt put food on the table. The only thing that will help you is YOU, and your ability to follow the path you have set.
Careers in network marketing, direct sales, and small-business entrepreneurship have exploded in the last decade. The fact that the entire Internet is at our fingertips has revolutionized who businesses sell to and how they reach them. We started out in online marketing and network marketing, made millions in sales and commissions, and then made millions more teaching others what we learned and how we operate now. Our clients have gone on to make hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales and as coaches themselves; a few have even made millions. Having a home business not only gives you job security, it can bring you so much more fulfillment and independence. You make the decisions, you say when you work and how much, you define your own limits, and you set your own goals.
