From Justinian to Branimir: The Making of the Middle Ages in Dalmatia: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "From Justinian to Branimir: The Making of the Middle Ages in Dalmatia" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

From Justinian to Branimir explores the social and political transformation of Dalmatia between c.500 and c.900 AD. The collapse of Dalmatia in the early seventh century is traditionally ascribed to the Slav migrations. However, more recent scholarship has started to challenge this theory, looking instead for alternative explanations for the cultural and social changes that took place during this period. Drawing on both written and material sources, this study utilizes recent archaeological and historical research to provide a new historical narrative of this little-known period in the history of the Balkan peninsula. This book will appeal to scholars and students interested in Byzantine and early medieval Europe, the Balkans and the Mediterranean. It is important reading for both historians and archaeologists.

I refer the reader to the index, which specifies the maps in which particular sites are shown. Sub-localities are presented in the following manner e.g. the cemetery Maklinovo brdo in the village of Kai is recorded as: Maklinovo brdo Kai*, which refers the reader to the entry of Kai, marked to be on the .

I would like to acknowledge here the great support I received from colleagues and friends in the making this book. First, this work has been supported by the Research Cooperability Program of the Croatian Science Foundation funded by the European Union through the European Social Fund under the Operational Programme Efficient Human Resources 20142020, within the project PZS-2019-02-1624 GLOHUM Global Humanisms: New Perspectives on the Middle Ages (3001600). The book is also one of the outcomes of the project Varvaria-Breberium-Bribir, which is partly financed by Macquarie University Faculty of Arts.

I am immensely grateful to Routledge editor Michael Greenwod for initiating and supporting the idea for this book. The draft of the manuscript was read by Florin Curta, Mladen Ani and Ivan Basi, who all offered great ideas and constructive criticism. Whatever errors remain are my own. I am also grateful to the following institutions and colleagues, who helped me obtain images for the book: Arheoloki muzej u Zadru (Jakov Vui), Zemaljski Muzej u Sarajevu (Mirsad Sijari and Ana Mari), Arheoloki Muzej u Zagrebu (Maja Buni), as well as Victor Ghica, and Ante Alajbeg. I also want to thank my colleagues in the Department of Ancient History at Macquarie University, and especially its Head Ray Laurence, for their support and collegiality. The book attempts to follow the epistemological methodological question A di to pie? (Where is that written?) posed by Ante Miloevi, from whom I learned so much. Immense gratitude goes to Mark Matic who meticulously and eloquently edited the manuscript. Finally, for everything I am grateful to my family to my wife Irena Maji, long-distance daughter Ariel Dino and most of all to Judita Nemira Dino, who decided to appear in this world during the writing of this book, for which reason it is dedicated to her.
