Most books begin with a dedication or acknowledgment. Due to the brutal nature of the following story, I have decided not to include one. (I dont think anyone I know would want to be mentioned in this particular book, anyway.) Instead, I will simply welcome you and thank you for your purchase.
What youre about to read is a work of pure fiction; I want to state that flat out so there are absolutely zero misunderstandings moving forward. Any suggestions or commands presented in these pages are done so in a satirical manner as a morbid form of entertainment, not literal directions meant to be followed or acted out in any way, shape, or form.
I am not a criminal psychologist, nor do I hold any degrees or certifications validating me as an expert in human behavior. What I do possess is a long history of observing and studying violent criminals. Im not saying what Ive written is 100% accurate, as no one will ever truly know what goes on inside the mind of a murderous psychopath. However, I sincerely believe Separating You has gotten it pretty darn close.
Do not get me wrong: Im not attempting to present what Ive written as the most extreme piece of literature or media ever conceived of; plenty of low budget direct-to-video films, musical acts, and starving wanna-be artists already hold that dubious honor. Instead, Ive tried for realism; an unfiltered, unadulterated narrative detailing what a serial killer would write if there were no repercussions to be had, no bargains to be made, and no media to manipulate. I think there is a very significant story that has never been told, and so Ive tried with the best of my ability to tell it.
Maybe youll read this book and find it quite tame in comparison to what this authors note is building it up to be. If so, I humbly apologize, but it has never and will never be meant to glorify violence. Instead, this book was written to explore violence: its causes, its results, its overall impact on society as we know it.
For any living victims who may have been affected by similar acts as described in this story, my heart and prayers are with you, sincerely. I respect your strength and courage to continue waking up every day and finding a will to go on, and I do not take your stories lightly at all, as I dont think any of my readers should.
I feel like I have written the darkest work of my life, and while I want to offer apologies for the story itself, I cant. I am proud of what Ive written, and I would not be publishing it for public consumption if I wasnt. Brutal honesty is the key to everything in life. Child sex trafficking shouldnt be a thing, and yet it is. Terrorism and mass shootings shouldnt exist, but they do. People getting attacked and brutalized in the most horrific ways imaginable shouldnt happen, and yet we see a new headline in the newspapers every day. In order to tell the best story possible, you cannot shoehorn in your own personal beliefs or shy away from certain details just because it may make you or your readers uncomfortable. Just as in real life, turning our heads away from the things that disgust us only makes it that much easier for victims, true victims, to continue being victimized.
In the case of future re-printings or postings, I want it to be known that this is not a bonus section or some fun authors perspective to give the book added content. This is very much a part of the publication, and I want everyone to see it. Ill say it one last time:
THE CONTENT DESCRIBED IN THIS BOOK ISNT REAL. DO NOT REENACT ANY OF THE SCENARIOS YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ. DO NOT AT ANY TIME CONSIDER COMMITTING VIOLENT ACTS AGAINST ANY HUMAN BEING, INCLUDING YOURSELF. IF YOU DO HAVE SUCH THOUGHTS OR URGES, THE PHONE NUMBER FOR THE MENTAL HEALTH HOTLINE IN THE UNITED STATES IS 1-866-294-0316
Please, dont hurt yourself or others. Get help. Seriously.

You awaken with a startle. Everything is pitch black. A few moments pass before you realize youve been blindfolded. You try to move your arms, only to discover they have been tied behind your back. You try to stand, but no go; your legs have been bound as well. It feels like you are sitting on a chairprobably one of the hard backs from the dining room. The left side of your head aches incessantly, your mind is in a daze. For all intents and purposes, your external senses have been completely cut off (except for your earsyou can still hear everything).
From your right, the familiar creak of the living room floorboards. Footsteps approaching. Your internal senses are more than making up for the numbness of the external ones; the overwhelming rush of panic rips through your skin like a 379 Peterbilt on a desolate highway.
My family , you think with a cold knowing. Where is my family!?
There is nothing you can do, a mans deep voice whispers into your ear. His hot breath steams against the nape of your neck, making all the little hairs stand up.
You try to yell out, try to ask what hes going to do. Where, oh where is your dear little family? All that comes out are muffled cries. Youve been gagged.
In one hand, he says, I have a .357 magnum. In the other, I have a kitchen knife. You have two choices: either I cut off your fingers, or I shoot you in the back of the head. Your will to continue living is what will make the final decision.
You notice something else just now. Yes, your wrists are tied behind you. But there is something else thereon your hands, something fuzzy and warm. It rubs against the tips of your fingers when you wiggle them.
Gloves. Your abductor has put gloves on you.
Just as you realize this, the floorboards creak again. Within moments you can feel his hands on yours, pulling the gloves off. Even though the room is relatively warm, your naked digits feel as if theyve been exposed inside a subzero meat locker.
