INTRODUCTION
After 20 years in the field of medicine, I have seen how my patients have suffered the consequences of obesity. There are a multitude of complications that can arise from being overweight: arthritis, depression, heart-related illnesses, high blood pressure, liver disease, diabetesthe list seems endless. For years I witnessed how my patients started diets that did not work or which would yield temporary results and eventually the lost weight would come back and then some. I witnessed the despair of my patients and how this problem affected them as time went on. They believed their lives to be ruined, devoid of energy while suffering the consequences that obesity brought them. They would often confide in me their belief that they would not get better and that all hope was lost for their case.
There is a great deal of variety in the type of diets that can be done, but many patients would have a difficult time following these without reaching a point of exhaustion. They would usually begin their diet enthusiastically, but their motivation would soon end. Some diets were better than others and were created with the best of intentions, but because of their complexity or intricacy, the patients would not lose weight or would have a hard time keeping any of the lost weight off.
I often thought that the ideal diet would be a simple method, easy to follow, without restrictions which allowed the patient to truly follow this method for life, without ever falling into apathy about his weight. In other words, I was looking for something that would truly signify a change in nutrition, as well as a change in "lifestyle". We needed something that could be implemented as permanent and stick. I studied many weigh loss methods, with special interest in the Mediterranean diet. Countries from this region have the lowest percentages of obesity and heart problems in the world. Really, what my patients needed was a diet which worked.
When I first heard about the subject of the metabolism, I thought that we were simply dealing with another diet. However, some of my patients were successfully losing weight with the help of Mr. Frank Suarez's book and were very enthusiastic about a diet that "allowed them to eat everything". The laboratory analysis that were conducted on those patients showed an overall improvement of their health. I actually found myself reducing the dosage of medication given to these patients and in particular to those diabetics that required insulin. I was struck with curiosity.
