WRITING GRIMOIRE
Use the Word as Your Wand for Magic, Manifestation & Ritual
LISA MARIE BASILE
May I write words more naked than flesh, stronger than bone, more resilient than sinew, sensitive than nerve.
SAPPHO
I ts been said that the tongue is a witchthat is, according to George Webbe, an Anglican Minister in 1619 New England. And you know what? He was absolutely right. Every day we use our words to make magic and to transform ourselves and our communities. And no one can stop us.
Because, as anyone who has been pushed to the margins knows, language is at the heart of magic. Our words, full of intent and evolution, are our wands.
Anti-witch rhetoric has endured for centuries. In the 1600s, this so-called witchs tongue came from wrongful speakingthat is, daring to speak of anything that wasn't socially acceptable. Anything not clean and easy. Anything that didnt fall in line.
Of course, it was fear driving this rhetoric: If people (particularly women) spoke too boldly, too freely, or too truthfully, they might dismantle the shackles of society (or, you know, poison crops and kill men by way of a sideways glance).
This fear is still sadly relevant today. We watch marginalized groups fight against being silenced. Perhaps it has happened to you.
When we speak about our injustices, bodies, fantasies, magic, desires, sexualities, shadows, or mental illnesses, we are often seen as radical, crazy, or broken, proving that our words still hold immense powerwhen spoken digitally, on the page, or in a diary.
It is in feral response to that silencingand in honor of our many diverse voicesthat this book is born.
In these pages, youll find a magic that is intuitive, elemental, shadowy, and spontaneous. Its a magic for nonlinear, imperfect, wild growth. The process is the focus; the magic happens when you devote time to ritual and to yourself.
Together, we will write our truths, our beauty, and our wildness while calling our shadows by their names. We will fully embrace the rebellion, power, and authenticity in the archetype of the witch, and we will conjure empathy, kindness, and power.
