About This Book

Donald Gee was an inveterate writer; his pen was never idle. His clear, forceful style and his sane, balanced approach made his writings acceptable everywhere. His articles appeared in all major Pentecostal periodicals across the world and his books were read in countless nations.

The original Pentecostal Movement was first written during the Second World War and gives readers a detailed account of the people, places and events that gave British Pentecostalism its influential place amongst world Pentecostal movements. Though it deals mainly with British history it frequently reflects upon personalities from other nations who played a part in the formation of Britains Pentecostal movements.

Beginning with the Welsh Revival and the Azusa Street Outpouring, the author documents the spreading flame of Pentecost from Barratt in Sunderland, Smith Wigglesworth in Bradford and a host of other pioneers who became leaders of the fledgling Pentecostal denominations.

This book will always be a primary source for the history of British Pentecostalism. In 1966, just before his death, Gee brought the story up to date, including reference to the second-wave of the Spirit through the Charismatic Movement, when its name changed to Wind and Fire.

Foreword

by the Rev. Gilbert W. Kirby, M.A., Principal of the London Bible College

Few men could have been better qualified to write a history of the Pentecostal Movement than Donald Gee. Indeed, he was sometimes referred to in certain circles as Mr. Pentecost. Evangelical Christians generally will surely welcome the appearance of a factual account of a Movement which cannot be lightly dismissed by them, and which has gained considerable momentum in recent years. Even those who do not necessarily share all the pre-suppositions of Pentecostalists should nevertheless be fully aware of their history and beliefs.

The spirit which pervades this book is typical of its author. Donald Gee was a man of broad sympathies, of wise counsel, and of great grace. Those of us who were privileged to have known him truly thank God upon every remembrance of him. The account of the Pentecostal Movement which he gives is fair, honest and up to date. No man knew the Movement more intimately than he. As one would have expected, his appraisal is balanced and sincere. He does not attempt to cover up some of the problems within their own ranks with which Pentecostalists have had to contend. An Assemblies of God pastor himself, Donald Gee reveals his intimate knowledge of other Pentecostal groups. The whole book is marked by an irenical spirit, and shows how over the years Pentecostalists have gained increasing acceptance in the eyes of their fellow Christians. One evidence of this in Britain is to be seen in the fact that both the Assemblies of God and the Elim Church are as denominations in associate membership of the Evangelical Alliance, while almost all the different Pentecostal Missionary Societies are linked with the Evangelical Missionary Alliance.
