John C. Green is associate professor of political science and director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute at The University of Akron. His work on religion and politics has appeared in anthologies and journal articles, and he is the co-editor (with James Guth) of The Bible and the Ballot Box: Religion and Politics in the 1988 Election (1991). He is currently engaged in research on the Protestant clergy and the membership of evangelical interest groups.
James L. Guth is professor and chair of political science at Furman University. In addition to numerous articles in scholarly journals and anthologies, Guth has co-edited (with John Green) The Bible and the Ballot Box: Religion and Politics in the 1988 Election. He, along with several other collaborators on this book, is currently engaged in a massive survey of the membership of religion-based political interest groups and in the analysis of the political attitudes and roles of pastors.
Ted G. Jelen is professor of political science at Illinois Benedictine College. He is the author of numerous articles on religion and politics, voting, and public opinion in scholarly journals. Jelen edited a volume entitled Religion and Political Behavior in the United States (1989), and is the author of The Political Mobilization of Religious Belief (1991) and (with E. Cook and C. Wilcox) Between Two Absolutes: Public Opinion and the Politics of Abortion (1992). His current research addresses problems in democratic theory.
Lyman A. Kellstedt is professor of political science at Wheaton College. His published works, which focus especially on the political behavior of evangelicals, have appeared in several influential anthologies in the religion and politics field and in sociology of religion and political science journals. He chaired the Religion and Politics Section of the American Political Science Association in 1989-90. He is currently the co-director of two major surveys: one of religious activists and the other of the mass public, the latter with a particular focus on religion.
David C. Leege is professor of government and director of the Program for Research on Religion, Church, and Society at the University of Notre Dame. Co-author (with Wayne Francis) of Political Research: Design, Measurement, and Analysis, Leege directed the massive Notre Dame Study of Catholic Parish Life and wrote its 15-part Report series. His current articles on cultural theory, religion, and politics have appeared in anthologies and sociology of religion and political science journals. He serves on the Board of Overseers of the National Election Studies and chaired its 1992 Presidential Election Study planning committee.
Corwin E. Smidt is professor of political science at Calvin College. His work on religion and politics has appeared in a variety of scholarly journals and books, and he has edited a volume entitled Contemporary Evangelical Political Involvement. His current research involves two joint endeavors: a study of political activism among Protestant clergy and a study of political activism among members of evangelical groups.
Kenneth D. Wald is professor and chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Florida. He has written Religion and Politics in the United States (2nd edition, 1992) and Crosses on the Ballot (1983), a study of religious influences in British elections. In addition to these books, he has published numerous book chapters and articles exploring the religious dimensions of mass political behavior. He has held research grants from the National Science Foundation and National Endowment for Humanities and was a Fulbright scholar at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 1991-93, he chaired the Religion and Politics Section of the American Political Science Association.
