WARNING
DO NOT actually light your goals on fire. Fire is dangerous and can cause serious harm.
Ripping up your goals and throwing them in the trash will do just fine.
They were putting on a competition to attract the best architects and designers in the world. They told everyone that budget wasnt an issue. Send us your building proposal and we are going to choose one person or firm to get the contract.
They had their eyes on 50 or so building designers even though they received thousands of submissions from all over the world. This would be one of the most prized contracts in architectural history.
Most designers sent in proposals that were inches thick. One designer, however, sent in a fax with one sentence: Ill sleep through the storms.
They called the designer to let him know that his assistant must have made a mistake, because all they got was the one sentence without a proposal.
He told them there was no mistake. I sent it to you on purpose. They were confused but slightly intrigued. The designer went on to explain that he didnt know how much it would cost to build his design because he would make sure the building was built in the best way possible. He also didnt know how long it would take because during building projects unexpected events happen all the time. He also told them he wasnt interested in sending them an inflated rsum like all the other designers. He did however make them a promise: I will sleep through the storms.
He went on to explain that when the building was finished he would never worry when the storms hit because of how well he would build the building. He told them that when the storms come they would want to call him to ensure the building would be safe. But he said, Do NOT call me, because I sleep through the storms.
He was awarded the contract.
We teach people how to build their own lives on a firm foundation and how to live in a way that allows them to peacefully sleep through the storms that inevitably come in their life. 4 years ago I was living in the closet of a gym. 2 years ago Jamie was picking golf balls off a driving range. 3 years ago I was turned down for an entry-level job by a rental car agency. 2 years ago Jamie was denied a job to stock shelves at a grocery store. Today, we serve individually as the directors of mental training for UCLA womens basketball, Memphis mens soccer, and Oregon womens golf. We serve as mentors to some of the best coaches around the country and have the privilege of serving people in athletics and business all over the world. We created the first mental training apps in the country for basketball, golf, and soccer and our brand Train to be CLUTCH is one of the most sought after and respected consulting brands in the country. We are passionate about our mission and proud of our work thus far. The best partwe sleep through the storms.
Would you like to sleep peacefully through the storms?
Then let our journey begin!
We believe the strategies in this book, if applied consistently over time, can help you unleash your greatest potential. They can help you go from merely surviving to thriving, from living out of fear, to having courage to chase the lions and climb the mountains in your life. However, we believe the ultimate path to deep satisfaction and true fulfillment can only be found through Jesus. We do not expect you to believe what we believe, and even if you dont believe what we believe, we think you can find immense value from the stories, tools, and strategies within. Our hope is that you will feel encouraged, refreshed, and maybe even a little bit lighter after reading this book. We want you to know that YOU matter, and that God loves you unconditionally regardless of whether you believe that, whether you change your behavior, or whether you ever do anything for Him. He is crazy about you, and His love is extravagant, unconditional, undeserved and greater than anything we can ever imagine. Religion = Do. Jesus = Done.
We also believe at the foundational level that your value comes from who you are, and not from what you do. We believe you are infinitely priceless because of who created you, and what He says about you. We believe we have all been perfectly and meticulously created for a purpose.
Once again, you dont have to believe what we believe, but that is what we believe and we want to be crystal clear about it from the beginning!
Some of the things we will talk about are going to sound crazy and many are countercultural, but we have seen them benefit people from all walks of life.
Some of your strategies might require some uncomfortable breaking down and being put back together in ways that are more beneficial.
For example, in order to get a better golf swing I had to get worse for a little bit in terms of results, so that I could develop a better swing and more sustainable golf game. It wasnt easy, and at times it was frustrating, but Im glad I did it. After a few months of taking lessons and working at the range by myself, I was consistently shooting scores I couldnt touch with my old swing.
Sometimes in life we have to change strategies to reach our full potential. Jay Z sold drugs to help get himself out of the Marcy housing projects in Brooklyn, but he never would have become the business mogul he is today if he hadnt shifted gears and changed strategies. Many times what got you to this level wont get you to the next level. We see it all the time in collegiate athletics. Players have to learn that the strategies that helped them be successful in high school and got them to college, will rarely help them excel at the collegiate level. The same transition often happens from college to professional athletics.
For us, most of this is not a matter of right and wrong. Its a question of what is most beneficial . We dont expect you to believe everything we believe, but we have seen some incredible results in our lives and in the lives of the people with whom we have had the pleasure of sharing this journey we call life.
Weve learned that what got us to this level will rarely get us to the next level, and that the toll-way to greatness is a very costly road.
Some of the concepts and strategies we discuss are simple, but we all know simple doesnt mean easy. We learned from Super Bowl winning coach, Chuck Knoll, champions do ordinary things better than everyone else.
We are excited and truly grateful you have found our work! We hope you will open your heart and join us on this journey
