The Dispeller of Obstacles is the heart essence of the accomplished master Padmasambhava who perceives the three times in the entire. It is the quintessence of one billion heart sadhanas of the Guru, the most unique terma buried in the land of Tibet; and it is the first among the Four Cycles of Guru Sadhana. This Gurus Heart Practice that Dispels all Obstacles contains in completeness all the profound key points of the view, meditation, and conduct of the Three Inner Yoga Tantras. It manifested from the secret treasury of the great wisdom, the vast realization of the Second Buddha of Uddiyana, as the self-existing natural vajra sounds in perfect melodious tones. Its expressions that are unmodified by the intellect of ordinary people, its words that are without delusion, and its meaning that is unmistaken, are exclusively due to the kindness of the three powerful knowledge-holders [Khyentse, Kongtrl, and Chokling], the great beings of the three families, who incarnated as masters to compile and propagate an ocean of secret teachings. It is exclusively through their kindness that this teaching was established in writing as the splendor of unending welfare and happiness for the disciples in the Land of Snow, and propagated to flourish everywhere. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche Before Padmasambhava left Tibet, he made many predictions and hid many teachings to be revealed in the future and he blessed his close disciples to be inseparable from himself. In this way, they would reincarnate in the future, reveal the hidden teachings, and be as powerful as Guru Rinpoche himself, endowed with great miraculous powers, such as the ability to fly through the sky, traverse freely through solid matter and be unimpeded in expounding all the sutras and treatises as well as the meaning of the tantras. In particular, he prophesied the coming of 108 great tertns or hidden treasure-revealers. Since world history fluctuates causing particular difficulties to arise at different times which must be faced by human beings, each tertn would appear at a certain period in history. Having foreknowledge of these historic intervals, Guru Rinpoche designed specific practices which would be revealed at the appropriate times in order to aid human beings. The tertns who would reveal the termas would then have a teaching that was totally fresh and up-to-date and meant for that specific time and situation. Just as we prefer to have fresh food prepared in a way that will not make us sick because its rotten, in the same way, the terma teachings revealed with the short lineage are endowed with a very special quality. Namely, that it has a short lineage that has not been interrupted by any damage or breaking of samaya. It has not been interpolated by anyone else but has come directly from Guru Rinpoche by means of the revelation of one of his disciples appearing as a present-day incarnation. The teaching is then spread to people for their immediate practice. The Dispeller of Obstacles belongs to this class of teachings. This is the cycle of teachings is based on guru sadhana. Guru Rinpoche practice is extremely important because Guru Rinpoche, the Lotus-born One, is not just a legendary figure from some old story of the past. He is an actual person who continuously carries out spontaneous activities, not only by sending emanations of himself into this world as tertns so that there is always fresh unimpaired teaching that people can practice but, also because of Guru Rinpoches spiritual influence and blessings are unceasing. If we can practice this sadhana, it will be very beneficial. Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche Dispeller of Obstacles is the most profound terma of the universal monarchs, Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa and Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. ReviewRight now, at present and in the time of future generations there will be countless obstacles for enlightenment and for attainment on the path. To go about removing these hindrances, there is one single method that is sufficient to clear them away and that is to call upon your guru from the core of your heart. That itself will remove every type of obstacle and once cleared away that itself means that attainment is reached, right at that moment. About the AuthorsPadmasambhava Guru Rinpoche was a 9th-century Tantric master who established Buddhism in Tibet and hid treasures. Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo was one of the most brilliant minds of the late 19th Century, master and terton.Chokgyur Lingpa was a great treasure revealer from the 19th century, renowned for his miraculous powers.Lama Putsi, Pema Tashi, is a modern-day, low-key meditator and teacher. This book, Dispeller of Obstacles, The Heart Practice of Padmasambhava, is the first in a new series presented by Rangjung Yeshe Publications. This series will offer videos, audios, photos, and commentaries as supports for the practices of the Three Roots. The Three Roots are the inner practices of tantra connected with sadhanas for the lama, yidam, and dakini. As is often said, The lama is the source of blessings, the yidam the source of accomplishment, and the dakinis and protectors are the source of activity.

Apparent differences, such as gender or peaceful versus wrathful modes, do not ultimately define these three, because in essence they are identicalthe display of the empty, cognizant, awake nature, rigpa. However, due to our varying dispositions as sentient beings needing to be tamed, they manifest in myriad ways to accomplish the utmost benefit. The qualities of each deity are the fully perfected qualities of our buddha nature; we undertake this deity training in order to connect with and accomplish that nature. Thus, we should practice whichever deity moves us most profoundly.

As Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche said, True blessings are the oral instructions on how to become enlightened in a single lifetime, which you can receive from a qualified master. In a practical way, we can experience this ourselves, since our guru is the source of guidance, inspiration, and strength for the Vajrayana path. He or she is the most vital, meaningful person in our lives, dispelling hindrances so we may progress in this tradition. Living in this degenerate age, we must seriously study whatever we intend to practice. These sacred texts, our teachers words, and our own intellect and experience need to harmonize, in order to clear away any misconceptions and doubts. The gift of teachings that we receive and apply expands our ordinary way of seeing reality and breaks down our normal, conditioned concepts.

Having a direct bond with a qualified, living teacher is our sole means of being introduced to the nature of our minds and being able to recognize and train in it. In the moment of love for our guru, we experience a gap, an opening free of mental constructs and internal gossip. This space offers the possibility to come into direct contact with the nature of our mind, true awareness. The Nyingma and Kagy traditions especially emphasize devotion and consider it indispensable. This is another reason why guru practice is so exalted, because we reach enlightenment by stabilizing the momentary recognition of our minds nature and by continually maintaining that recognition. Without this, although the path may be a very enjoyable one, it will definitely be quite long.

Guru practice offers an infusion of direct insight, whereby each step brings us closer to accomplishing our teachers mind, as our teacher is no different from the primary figure in any Three Roots practice. The Tukdrub Barchey Knsel cycle of teachings presented here serves as an example and framework, although any other guru practice will suffice. While the specifics relate to this cycle of teachings, which I have chosen because I have the most familiarity and precious material for it, the principles outlined are universal and applicable to all guru practices. Such topics include development and completion stages, with guidance on the three samadhis; the fourfold stakes of recitation; the four recitation intents; and feasts, as well as advice for structuring a retreat. As with guru practices, all sadhanas follow the same basic format; only the liturgies differ. Thus, I have tried to offer teachings and advice that are general to all sadhana practices.

This cycle of Tukdrub Barchey Knsel is a vast and profound terma, hidden treasure, a revelation with a rich history that unfolds throughout the book. This presentation is special, because it contains not only the root text and classical commentaries by the tertns, hidden treasure revealers, Chokgyur Lingpa and Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, but also explanations by modern-day masters, such as Tulku Urgyen and Orgyen Topgyal Rinpoches.

This extensive cycle contains teachings and practices that encompass the preliminaries up to and including the Great Perfection. Moreover, the main sadhanas come in varying lengths, ranging from a few pages up to a few hundred pages, and the subsidiary sadhanas consist of separate practices for each of the main deities. Linking to a fresh terma has the power to imbue us with hot, juicy blessings that invigorate our being and generate profound devotion and joy.
