    Foreword

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

    Nelson Mandela

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Paul Hernandez when I was directing the Association of American Colleges and Universities project Committing to Equity and Inclusive Excellence: Campus-Based Strategies for Student Success. He was serving as the Chief Diversity Officer at one of the participating campuses. As part of the project to examine and close equity gaps in student outcomes and educational designs, the team at the institution incorporated the Pedagogy of Real Talk (PRT) strategies. Pauls work inspired everyone in the room and left us wanting to learn more.

I reached out to Paul immediately and I have been inspired by his work ever since. I invited him to give a workshop at one of AAC&Us Diversity, Equity, and Student Success conferences. I believe it is important to share promising practices that can have impact on the success of students, especially historically marginalized and racially minoritized students. After his session at that conference, we had the opportunity to have lunch and to talk, and we did... for hours. Paul shared his story and what motivates him to engage in efforts to transform education into an environment where students, regardless of their backgrounds, can thrive and learn. I knew then what I still know todayhe is more than a caring educator. He is the Real Talk educator.
