Jenny, your being who you are makes me want to be a better me
Anything worth something in life is always some sort of group effort. This book is no different. So Id like to kick some shout-outs to a few people who have made this project possible.
For my wife and kids:
Jenny, you really are my ride-or-die. You are such an encourager for me, but youre also not afraid to give me the slap-in-the-butt I need for just a little more hustle. Thanks for graciously pushing me, patiently waiting for me, and always believing in me.
Lucy, Jake, Sally, Cooper, and Whit: out of the whole lineup, Id choose each of you every time.
For those at work whove helped me so much:
Megan Gross, I still cant believe you took the job twelve years ago, but Im so glad you did. You keep it all straight, you treat everyone so well, and you make it all so fun. Thank you!
Suzy Gray, youre almost always the smartest, hardest working, and most strategic person in the room, but you act like you dont even know it. I owe you and Brooklyn so much because of all youve done for me. Thank you!
Andy Stanley, thanks for giving me a chance all those years ago. Thanks for being the most respectable pastor on the planet. Anyone else with your amount of power and fame has become pretty weird, but you just seem to stay on your knees.
Lane Jones, thanks for teaching me that it is possible to be friends with your boss. Youre a terrific leader and a great boss!
Justin Elam, thanks for helping me shape these thoughts at the very beginning.
Evan McLaughlin, thanks for always letting me run stuff by you at the very last minute.
Mallory and Adam Boyle, you two were there for the beginning of this, and Im so grateful for you both!
Jonny Wills, thanks for being so easy to work with and for doing such great work. Youre a good man but also a talented man. Im super grateful for you!
Debbie Causey, youve taught me so much about emotional health because you are just so emotionally healthy. Thank you!
The publishing team at Zondervan has been so amazing to work with.
Ryan Pazdur, youre a phenomenal editor, but youre way more than that. Youre smart, hardworking, intuitive, and creative. More than anything, though, you took this project so personally. You were in it with me, and I cant thank you enough!
Nate Kroeze, books arent that helpful if they dont get into peoples hands, and youre so good at that part. Keep carving out your own lane. Youre one of a kind.
Kim Tanner and Dawn Hurley, youre like the Mariano Rivera of this process. You both came in at the end and made it all so much better.
Jesse Hillman, thanks for handling the tough stuff with grace and wisdom.
Oh, and Stan Gundry, youre a legend. Im still waiting on a ride in that precious car of yours.
CHAPTER 1
THE DANGER
OF THE
DISTRACTION
Im so easily distracted.
Last year, my ever-adventurous in-laws from Texas were coming to Atlanta for a visit. Instead of hitting up the same attractions they had done every year with our kids, they asked us if we would want to explore a new city, one within easy driving distance of our home. My wife and her mom got together and planned a short trip to Chattanooga, a pretty cool city with great downtown activities for kids.
It was a hot summer evening in July, and after a busy day at work, I pulled my recently purchased Ford Explorer into the driveway of the rental house wed booked a few blocks north of Chattanooga. I was the first to arrive, and the owner of the home (who lived right next door) was already there, waiting in the driveway to greet me. Even though the sun hadnt set, the sky was growing dark. A significant thunderstorm was brewing. As soon as I opened my car door to say hello, huge drops of rain began falling. I raced to the front door of the house and followed the owner inside for a quick tour.
Ten minutes later, my wife, our kids, and my in-laws arrived. Our five young kids raced into the house like it was the grand opening of a Chuck E. Cheese and they were giving away free tickets to the first customers. They were excited, to say the least. I kissed my wife, greeted her parents (whom I hadnt seen in a few months), and introduced everyone to Jim, the homeowner. The scene was a little chaotic with everyone suddenly filling the empty house, kids racing around, and multiple conversations taking place. It reminded me of the opening scene of
