This encyclopedia is just a tiny glimpse into the world of angels, saints, ascended masters, gods, goddesses, and deities. There are literally thousands of spiritual icons. Availing yourself of their wisdom and knowledge can be a fun and exciting process. Getting to know them is certainly enjoyable and enlightening. Working with them on a regular basis can vastly improve the quality of your life and facilitate your spiritual explorations.

I am so grateful I was asked to write this book. I began my own spiritual explorations as a young girl. I always had a curiosity about life and what, if anything, existed beyond the perception of my physical senses. Originally I wanted to be a nuclear physicist and explore the subatomic world. Quantum physics has shown me I have explored the same territory. I just arrived there from a different direction.

I never really knew much about saints, but as I researched their lives, I found them fascinating. At first I was struck by the pain and suffering they experienced in their lives, but then I noticed the theme of peace and acceptance. Even when they were being tortured to death, witnesses reported an incredible sense of peace emanating from them. These people dedicated their lives to developing and deepening their connection with God and, in the process, developed the ability to perform miracles. Many of the saints were able to do amazing things. They were able to levitate, bilocate, and turn water into wine. These men and women taught me a lot.

I pored over thousands of names, not only of saints, but also of angels, ascended masters, gods, goddesses, and deities, deciding whom to include in this book. Their lives inspired me to trust the process. I opened up my mind and my heart, and this book was born. It seemed to take on a life of its own. At times it felt like it was unfolding before my eyes.

Give yourself the gift of getting to know them. I have found it helpful to approach the beings in this book with curiosity. Time and again, just when I thought I knew all about an angel or saint or deity, I would be surprised by another facet of their personality. After numerous surprises I began to approach the whole process with an open mind and a great deal of curiosity.

As I continued to work with this wide assortment of angels, saints, ascended masters, gods, goddesses, and deities, I began to imagine a huge school bus. At each stop a variety of individuals would get on and off. The more spiritual icons I let on the bus, the more knowledge there was available to me. No matter how many got on or off, I was still driving the bus, but I had their wisdom and knowledge available to me. I could ask them for directions or for their assistance. As I continued to work on this book, I realized their love and wisdom was always available to meall I had to do was ask.

Now these beings have become part of my everyday life. Sometimes it feels like the bus is already pretty full, but there always seems to be room for one more. The variety of perspectives and the different world views each of these beings brings with them is very expansive. The world view of an Aborigine living in Australia is certainly very different from a woman growing up in Ireland two thousand years ago. Yet, their feelings and views about life are still alive in Blodeuwedd and in the Wandjina. As you get to know the beings in this book, your world view will expand and your ability to connect with other people will deepen.

You hold in your hands a book filled with love, wisdom, and immense possibilities. Make these angels, saints, ascended masters, gods, goddesses, and deities your friends. Talk to them, ask for their help, allow them to join you as you journey through your life, moving toward greater freedom, joy, and love. They are certainly more than willing to help you. As soon as you ask and are willing to accept their aid, they will be there. They always respect your free will. They will never impose themselves on you.

Just as a trip around the world changes a person, your life can be transformed by working with these beings from all over the globe. You really can get to know them. Imagine they are your new neighbors. Spend time with them, talk to them, ask them questions, and see what happens.

Working with these beings is one of many steps you can take toward a rich and satisfying spiritual life. They are an introduction to the fascinating world of spiritual teachers and guides. There isnt even a need to believe in a particular god or angel in order to work with that god or angel. Spirituality isnt about beliefs; it is about having a direct experience. Play with these entities long enough, and I can guarantee you will have lots of experiences! I was amazed at the incredible presence each of these beings has. Writing this book was like going to a party and interviewing a lot of intriguing people. You now have the opportunity to read those interviews. Read this book with curiosity and an open mind. Thumb through the pages and see who catches your attention. If a certain god or goddess resonates with you, explore that particular tradition in greater depth. As I wrote about the Hindu deities, I was fascinated by them. I love the idea of endless beginnings and endings. Their gods are all so colorful and alive. The stories of their lives are used to teach children morals and lessons about life and to show people how to experience happiness, freedom, and joy.

I have had the honor to study with several indigenous teachers. Their love, wisdom, and guidance have totally transformed my life. As I wrote about some of the deities from those traditions, my understanding of their culture and their world view has deepened. I hope you will allow yourself to be touched by these amazing beings. Open your heart and mind to them. Allow yourself the time to get to know them.

I wasnt taught as a child how to quiet my mind and listen to the angels speaking to me. As a matter of fact, as a young girl, I was discouraged from talking to my imaginary playmate.

There are many ways you can work with this book. It is beautiful, so you can just have it as a coffee-table book. Simply leave it sitting out somewhere where you can see it. When you feel compelled, browse through it at your leisure. No doubt youll be inspired by what you read.

Alternately, if you have a specific concern, you can look in the index and find several potential helpers. Suppose, for example, that youve lost your keys. By turning to the index, youll discover that Saint Anthony is a whiz at finding lost objects, so you can say a little prayer asking him to help you and then go happily about your life because you found your keys. The same is true when you need help with larger concerns, such as mending a broken relationship or conceiving a child.
