As the learned Greek philosopher, Aristotle, suggests, excellence is NOT an accident. Its not something youre going to stumble upon during your lifes journey. EXCELLENCE IS A CHOICE In order to achieve excellence in your life, you are going to have to make a choice. You are going to have to make a choice to be excellent. But, using the phrase have to implies that its something you must do. It makes it an obligation.
But thats not entirely correct. You dont have to do anything. You dont have an obligation to do anything. Instead, Im suggesting that you get to make the choice to be excellent. In other words, consciously choosing to be excellent is not an obligation. You dont have to do it.
Its a privilege to consciously choose to be excellent. You get to to consciously make such a choice. After all, its your privilege to do so. EXCELLENCE IS NOT PERFECTION Perfection does not tolerate mistakes, whereas excellence acknowledges and actually embraces the fact that youre a human being who is going to make mistakes. Excellence doesnt punish you for making those mistakes. Instead, one who is excellent, chooses to learn from those mistakes.
As the great football coach, Vince Lombardi said: Perfection is not attainable, but if we chaseperfection we can catch excellence. EXCELLENCE IS NOT A DESTINATION Excellence is NOT a destination. Its a journey. Thats because once you realize youve done something excellent, you realize youre capable of so much more. SO WHAT IS EXCELLENCE? Now that we know what excellence is not, lets talk about what it is and how we can go about creating it in our lives. On a personal level, excellence is a state in which:
- you surpass your previous levels of achievement;
- you become superior to where you were before;
- you outdo what youve previously done.
Quite simply, if you want to live an excellent life, youre going to have to consciously choose to:
- surpass your previous levels of achievement;
- become superior to where you were before; and
- outdo that which youve previously done.
ITS A TRANSFORMATIVE PROCESS Creating excellence in your life is a conscious process wherein you decide to undergo a personal transformation and to stop being the person you were and to start becoming the person you can be. ITS A STATE OF MIND Excellence is a state of mind and a quality of life.
It is consciously choosing that no matter how far you go, you can always go farther and that you should work toward that goal. It is consciously choosing that you are going to constantly evolve as a human being and that you are going to constantly work toward getting better and better as you go through life. EXCELLENCE IS ABOUT ACHIEVING YOUR POTENTIAL Excellence is about becoming the greatest you that you are capable of becoming. Excellence is about NOT wasting the opportunities that appear before you. Excellence is about taking advantage of those opportunities. SO, WHATS THE PATH TO ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE? As noted author, Tom Peters said: The path to excellence is to remove allnon-excellent things from your life. SO HOW DO WE DO THAT? Ive learned over the years, it helps to have a system.
Over my first 60 years on this planet, Ive battled a lot of personal demons. Id like to think Ive met those demons head-on and worked through many of them. In order to work through those demons, Ive developed a personal system of principles, standards and guidelines by which I live my life. Every time I encounter a problem or a less than ideal situation, I use this system of principles, standards and guidelines to help me figure out what steps to take to improve the situation. My #1 personal demon was living a life of massive obesity that started when my mother died, when I was just 8 years old. At my peak, I weighed 367 pounds.
As I write these words, I stand in at 150 pounds. Thats a weight loss of 217 pounds! I was able to do this with no drugs or surgery. I was able to do this by slowly but surely, over a number of years, making conscious choices about how I was going to improve my life (and health) and by sticking to those choices. Your personal demons may be totally different than mine. If thats the case, dont worry, as the principles, standards and guidelines in this book dont focus exclusively on the subject of weight loss. Instead, they focus on the subject of transformative change and they apply to everyone in all situations.
Unfortunately, it took me 60 years of living to create what I like to call My Excellent Life. Fortunately, I was able to put things together, before it was too late. Many people never get that far. My goal is to help you create your own excellent life and to help you get there a lot faster than I did. I want to help you make your personal transformative journey a lot easier than mine was. THE IDEAS IN THIS BOOK Many of the ideas in this book arent new.
They are ideas that have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Along the way, Ive attempted to acknowledge many of the sources Ive drawn upon and that Ive learned from, along my personal transformative journey. What is new in this book is the way Ive taken these ideas and incorporated them into a unique, efficient and highly organized system of transformative change.
