ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Throughout the writing of this book I have been lovingly surrounded by my interested and caring family, friends, and colleagues. My love for my childrenBonnee and Danny, Melissa and David, Alyson and Margot, and for their children: Charlotte, Lindsay, Jake, Zachary, Juliane, and Baby Noahprovided powerful inspiration to write about what may be a part of their genetic blueprint. I am forever grateful to the many friends who offered not only encouragement, but also contributed each in their own special way. Nutritionist Sondra Kronberg took time out of her impossibly busy schedule to review and discuss the shaping of the manuscript. Margery Weinroth and Eleanor Dubin were invaluable offering both encourgement and ideas after reading the early, difficult stages of the manuscript. I was pleased to have nutritionist Joy Suskin offer special insights, based on her familiarity with both my programs and my philosophy. Thanks and deep appreciation to those people who were there, supplying constant interest and loving support as kindling for the creative fires: Donna Gelman, Diana and Stanley Langer, Ellie Rothschild, Susan Hans, Maxine Pines, Sydelle Prince, Marty, Mary, and Jared Green, and certainly not the leastUncle Hank and Aunt Helen.
As always, without my clients there could be no book. I want to thank them all for being actively involved and supportive of my ongoing work. Their willing participation and passionate quest for a better life has been the motivation to create this program.
Special thanks to my agent, Wendy Weil, who was excited, as always, to hear my new ideas while offering her sage advice and constant support. I am particularly grateful to my collaborator, Billie Fitzpatrick, whose considerable talent, organizational skills, and calm presence were instrumental in the creation of this book. The wonderful staff at Viking has my deep appreciation, especially my publisher, Clare Ferraro, who was not only supportive and enthusiastic but also understood my work in a very special and important way. Many thanks go to my editor, Janet Goldstein, for trusting me to go forward with the manuscript, developing it as I imagined it would be. The publicist Cindy Hamel and art director Roseanne Serra, thank you for your unique and critical contributions to the success of this book.
I want to thank Jeffrey Bland for disseminating his ground-breaking research in his annual seminars that allowed so many health practitioners to enhance and extend the quality of life for their clients. Adam Banning placed himself, and his vast resources of nutrient research, at my disposal, applying his considerable knowledge to help me work out some of the knottier issues of formulating a supplement program that could be effective in this book. I would also like to extend my appreciation to Metagenics Inc. for making its vast research archives available and for allowing the adaptation of its excellent illustration of cellular blood sugar metabolism. Dr. Alan Warshowsky, gynecologist extraordinaire, offered critical technical advice after reading the manuscript. His input has been especially valuable.
Finally, I want to give my deepest thanks to my husband, Arthur, for his loving interest and hard work. He has remained, as always, my soul mate, offering his love, support, and advice when most needed. His steadfast belief that one should always reach for the stars has encouraged me to stretch beyond any imagined limits.

INTRODUCTION
In 1995 my career as a nutritionist changed completely. I went from being a one-on-one nutrition counselor and lecturer to author of The 5-Day Miracle Diet. Adding this dimension to my work opened up my world: I was able to share my approach to nutrition with thousands more people both in print and on television and radio. This opportunity was exciting and rewarding beyond my wildest dreams not only because I was suddenly able to reach a much wider audience but also because the responses to my work have continued to inspire my passion for finding solutions for optimal health.
In my first book I was able to tell the story of my personal odyssey that led me to the discovery that putting an end to carbohydrate craving is the key to achieving balanced blood sugar control. I was overwhelmed by the response to The 5-Day Miracle Diet.
