    Introduction

    Dear Friend,

Self-talk changed my life. It took me from feeling lost and unfilled, to doing literal cartwheels from pure joy. Happiness became my new default. Loving life. And soon after that, everything else in my life started going right and falling into place. If youve read my book, Coffee Self-Talk, you know the story of how I used a simple, five-minute, morning ritual to transform my life into days that feel glittering and magical all by changing the words that I say to myself while I sip my morning coffee.

It wasnt long after this daily ritual transformed my life that I started looking for ways to add more self-talk into my day. I craved the high it gave me!

So I started doing a bedtime ritual that I called Pillow Self-Talk, and I saw equally impressive results there, too. I kept asking myself, How far can I take this? Where else can I inject more secret sauce for magical living?

And, although you can let positive affirmations run through your mind all day, theres something special that happens when you attach your self-talk to a specific habit or ritual. Such as your morning coffee, or before bed.

Wine Self-Talk, as an idea, started as a joke in our home. I mean, it sounds awesome, right? It was shortly after I finished writing Coffee Self-Talk, and we were living in Italy, where the boxed wine is quite good, and we always had both red and white on tap, no corkscrew needed.

Sometime around the dozenth time my husband and I made the joke, I started thinking about the idea seriously.

    What if?

What would happen if I linked positive affirmations with the ritual of having a glass of wine?

Wine comes with a few connotations. Its fancy. Drinking a glass is like a special occasion. Its delicious. But most of all, for me anyway, wine is about relaxation. Loosening up. In fact, wine always makes me sleepy, so I never imbibe much, just a few sips, and my husband polishes off whatever is left in my glass.

One evening, I dimmed the lights, poured myself a glass of red, and sat down on my comfy couch with a list of affirmations my self-talk script. I took a sip of the wine, and I started reading the script out loud. Then another sip. Then another.

Im a lightweight, so it didnt take long, when

Wow! Amaaaazing! The words in the affirmations felt like they were gliding smoothly from my mouth. That nice, relaxed, swooshy quality (you know, that delicious wine feeling) came over me, as it always does. But this time, the feeling was somehow linked to my thoughts, and it seemed to embed itself into the words, and lift them up, giving them special meaning, special importance.

Wine Self-Talk was no joke after all. I was onto something.

My little Wine Self-Talk ritual quickly became an important feature in my life.

First, it was very relaxing. Second, something about the wine made the ritual feel special. Imbued with importance, like a ceremony honoring the moment. Even with our boxed wine at the ready, we always had plenty of bottles aroundit was Italy, after all, which produces more wine than anybody, even France. Id often open a bottle for my ritual, to heighten the special occasion effect. The graceful, sexy shape of the bottle, the popping-open sound, the rich smell of the cork, the glug glug as you pour, the pretty glass it all enhanced the experience. Self-talk is extra powerful when linked to your senses and emotions. Wine plus self-talk, it turned out, was a
