    Praise for I Choose Victory

I feel like I was just mentored while I read I Choose Victory. The cadence of this book was a perfect blend of story examples and scriptural references, masterfully woven together with points that will have you making different choices in the battle of identity and perspective. Cynthia navigates the reader through a very vulnerable heart process. She models her own journey in it so you feel safe to ask yourself the hard questions and be authentic as you have some very real people to compare your process to. I highly recommend this as a study book, for book clubs, or as a discipleship or mentoring guide for groups, individuals, and anyone who wants to walk with the victory that you can thrive in on this side of eternity.

I love this book, but even more than that, I love Cynthia. She is my friend. She is real and raw and knows what it means to choose victory when there would be so many reasons to sit down in victimhood. Lets lean in and listen.

    Sheila Walsh

I have known and admired Cynthia for many years. Her voice is like no other in the media landscape for a reason: her life is like no other. When she writes about overcoming circumstances and moving from victim to victor, she not only talks the talk. Shes walked the walk. All of us face adverse and traumatic events in our lifeand some much more profound than others. As Cynthias life story reveals, there is no circumstance we cant get through with God on our side. This is a book worth reading.

In I Choose Victory, Cynthia shares how she chose to believe the truth of Gods Word and the resulting liberty she has found in Christ. Every day, in myriad ways, we are choosing to believe who God says we are or to believe our feelings or someone elses perception. It is time to choose! Choose to believe God. Choose to take Him at His Word and live as a victor instead of a victim. I have been enriched by Cynthias friendship and testimony. Cynthia has been there. She will be your guide into the life that Christ died to make available to all who will believe and choose!

Cynthia Garrett is, to put it mildly, a force of nature. But she is a force of nature in the best possible way, because when you are with her you are forced to see the world through her eyes, and those eyes have seen a lot. What she writes about in I Choose Victory isnt nice platitudes and plucky optimism, but is instead born out of a lifetime of overcoming racism, sexism, abuse, and harassment. This is a book written by someone who has every right to play the victim card, but who has chosen instead to fight back by refusing that label. This isnt a book about one woman who is stronger than everyone else; it is a roadmap for everyone to stand up for themselves by not letting the actions or opinions of others define who you are.

To know Cynthia Garrett is to be gifted with a breath of fresh air for the soul. As you listen to her share the amazing stories of her life, you know she makes the decision to choose victory every day. She writes as though the reader is a dear friend, sharing heart to heart about past trauma and the beauty of moving forward into emotional healing. You may begin with tears but you will end with joy, courage, and a fresh look at Scripture. This book is an every woman read.

    Preface

This book is about victory. Its about staring in the face of the things that have tried, sometimes repeatedly, to make you a victim and finally finding your voice and yelling, Enough is enough! I will not be silenced into fading away any longer. I will live. I will speak. I will take care of me. The simple reality is that, while people around the world experience harsh realities and abuse daily, victory is born of a refusal to reside in pain.

One of the wisest sisters I have is Sheila Walsh, cohost of the TV Show Life Today with James and Betty Robison and a bestselling author of more than five million books. Her vulnerability is balanced with an inner strength. When I met her, I knew right away she had a tremendous story to tell about choosing victory for her life. I asked her about a time she felt she lived with a victims mindset and how she overcame it; this is what she had to say.

    Cynthia Garrett

Sheila Walsh: My father was a very loving, strong, godly man. But when I was very young, he suffered from a brain aneurysmand after that, his personality changed, and he turned his rage on me.

I vividly remember the last time I saw my father. I was about six years old, and I turned just in time to realize he was about to bring his cane down on my skull. I dont remember whether I pulled his cane from him or I pushed it, but he lost his balance and hit the ground hard in our living room. He just lay there, making awful noises. The last look I saw in his eyes was one of absolute hatred, which was hard for me to process as a child.
