In order to make this book accessible to a broad, non-specialist readership, Greek and Latin sources are not referred to by means of the abbreviations preferred by most classical scholars. Instead, the following conventions have been adopted:
For works that have widely known English titles, these have been used: Platos Republic, the Iliad, or Hesiods Works and Days.
Where only one source text by an author survives, references are to the authors name. Thus, chapters refer to Livy, and leave the title of his work Ex urbe condita implicit.
Other sources are on their first occurrence in a chapter identified by the name of the author, followed by full Latin title and an English translation placed in parentheses; for example, Arnobius Adversus nationes (Against the pagans). On subsequent occurrences in the same chapter, the English titles are used. Exceptions to this rule are works whose Latin titles verge on being untranslatable proper names: Clement of Alexandria Protrepticus; Ovid Amores.
Most classical sources have been published and translated in numerous editions and are also available online. They are thus easily accessible in a wide range of translations, versions and formats, and unless references are to specific translations, further bibliographic information for Latin and Greek sources is not provided in the reference list at the back of this volume.
