INTRODUCTION
A NEW DAY DAWNS
Kamran: When you think about your anxiety, what do you hear inside your mind? What is your inner voice saying? Just take a moment and connect with it; hear it, let it speak.
Client: It is generally considering what if situations, like What if I say something stupid and everyone laughs at me? or What if I get stuck on the train and cant get off?
Kamran: Thank you. And with what you hear, what do you see in the space of your thoughts? As you think and hear this inner dialogue, are there any pictures?
Client: Sometimes.
Kamran: Close your eyes if it helps and access the sounds and pictures. What do you see?
Client: I see the worst happening. People laughing at me, or me panicking on the train, feeling stuck and it ends there in my mind.
Kamran: And what do you feel from what you see and what you hear?
Client: Anxious.
Kamran: And where are those anxious feelings located in your body? Take a moment to connect with them and feel where they are now.
Client: In my stomach.
Kamran: Describe the shape to me of the anxious feelings that are in your stomach and if there is any movement.
Client: Its like a round knot thats moving around as though its in a washing machine. I sometimes wake up and this feeling in my stomach is already there.
Kamran: OK, I am going to show you how to work with your anxious inner voice, how to stop the anxious thoughts that you see in your mind and how to ease the feelings in your stomach quickly.
Client: If I knew how to do that, I would feel so much better Id feel like the old me.
Kamran: Then let me show you how.
THE APPROACH
As an anxiety and mindset practitioner, one of the most common things I hear from my clients who are experiencing anxiety is, I just want to feel like the old me. This theme comes up session after session, week after week, just as in the above conversation.
Another common question that I am asked is: How did you know that I have the voice in there? I have explored this further with various individuals who have even gone on to say, I thought it was only me that had that anxious inner chatter, or I didnt realize that people talk so much inside their head.
We all do it is usually my answer, because its true. We all think through pictures and have internal sounds. Most people, however, do not listen to that inner monologue or take notice of the pictures going through their minds; they just let them happen.
If you want to change or improve something in your life, including your anxiety, you must first begin to change and improve the thoughts that are being formed in your mind. These thoughts have a very real effect on how you feel and, consequently, behave.
Im sure you would have benefited greatly in your life if you had been taught at school how to understand how you are thinking, what it is making you feel, behave and experience, and how to effectively change your thoughts to improve how you are feeling. This is not something many of us are shown how to do. Whether you are 14 years old or 80 years old, learning about your mind and how to work with your thoughts can and will allow you to have a better experience in operating your mind and your emotions.
