THE CUSP-BORN LEO
Are you really a Leo? If your birthday falls during the fourth week of July, at the beginning of Leo, will you still retain the traits of Cancer, the sign of the Zodiac before Leo? And what if you were born late in Augustare you more Virgo than Leo? Many people born at the edge, or cusp, of a sign have difficulty determining exactly what sign they are. If you are one of these people, heres how you can figure it out, once and for all.
Consult the cusp table on the facing page, then locate the year of your birth. The table will tell you the precise days on which the Sun entered and left your sign for the year of your birth. In that way you can determine if you are a true Leoor whether you are a Cancer or Virgoaccording to the variations in cusp dates from year to year (see also page 17).
If you were born at the beginning or end of Leo, yours is a lifetime reflecting a process of subtle transformation. Your life on Earth will symbolize a significant change in consciousness, for you are either about to enter a whole new way of living or are leaving one behind.
If you are a Leo, born during the fourth week of July, you may want to read the horoscope book for Cancer as well as Leo. Cancer holds the keys to many of your secret uncertainties and deep-rooted problems, and your secret needs and wishes. You are the spirit of independence and creativity, or want to be. Yet through Cancer you reveal your deep, but often hidden, need to have strong ties. You may be trying to leave dependencies behind, yet you find yourself drawn again and again to the past or to family responsibilities.
You reflect the birth of a new sign, a ripe, whole person, fully able to tap and realize all your potentials for love and creativity.
If you were born after the third week of August, you may want to read the horoscope book for Virgo as well, for through Virgo you learn to put all your talents as a lover or creator to work. Your love for life is infectious, and your zest and sunny disposition are an inspiration to everyone around you. You are capable of seriousness, discipline, and great diligence.
You are a loverardent, passionate, and determined that love will not elude you. Though you may try to avoid it, you will find yourself in work, health, or duty situations that demand less emotionand more mind. You are not afraid of taking a gamble and are reluctant to give up your love of enjoyment for work or studies. You can blend professionalism and propriety in perfect amounts. You are the natural mixture of creativity and discipline, able to feel and to analyze. You symbolize the warmth and fullness of a late summer day, a natural ripeness and maturity that is mellow and comfortable to be near.

THE ASCENDANT: LEO RISING
Could you be a double Leo? That is, could you have Leo as your Rising sign as well as your Sun sign? The tables on pages 8-9 will tell you Leos what your Rising sign happens to be. Just find the hour of your birth, then find the day of your birth, and you will see which sign of the Zodiac is your Ascendant, as the Rising sign is called. The Ascendant is called that because it is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth. For a more detailed discussion of the Rising sign and the twelve houses of the Zodiac, see pages 17-20.
The Ascendant, or Rising sign, is placed on the 1st house in a horoscope, of which there are twelve houses. The 1st house represents your response to the environmentyour unique response. Call it identity, personality, ego, self-image, facade, come-on, body-mind-spiritwhatever term best conveys to you the meaning of the you that acts and reacts in the world. It is a you that is always changing, discovering a new you. Your identity started with birth and early environment, over which you had little conscious control, and continues to experience, to adjust, to express itself. The 1st house also represents how others see you. Has anyone ever guessed your sign to be your Rising sign? People may respond to that personality, that facade, that body type governed by your Rising sign.
Your Ascendant, or Rising sign, modifies your basic Sun sign personality, and it affects the way you act out the daily predictions for your Sun sign. If your Rising sign indeed is Leo, what follows is a description of its effect on your horoscope. If your Rising sign is not Leo, but some other sign of the Zodiac, you may wish to read the horoscope book for that sign as well.
With Leo on the Ascendant, that is, in the 1st house, the planet that rules Leo is therefore in the 1st house. That planet is the Sun. Here it may give you a special robustnessin appearance, in health, in spirit, in actionthat you can count on long after your normal energy reserves have dried up. On the negative side, the Sun here may give you an overdose of pride or insolence. Such pride could make you quick to resent or retaliate when reason instead should be the response.
Leo in the 1st house accentuates every Leo trait, for the Rising sign has a strong influence in your horoscope. A flair for the dramatic will be especially evident in the fabric of your life. You like managing people and events as long as you can play center stage, or at least weave a powerful character part, for much of the time. You could create intrigue if it provides an opportunity for you to take a leading role. However much you like pulling strings, though, your frank and generous disposition rises above petty disputes. You abhor superficial alliances or cliques of any sort.
There may also be drama in your personal appearance and in your possessions and surroundings. You have been known to adorn yourself and your environment as much, maybe sometimes more, for the effect it will create as for the comfort it will give you and others. Your appearance itself, whether natural or affected, may well run to the true Leo type: high coloring, proud head, bold stance. You can use physical gestures as signals to peopleto lure, to persuade, to threaten. And because love, especially to be loved, is a fundament of your ego, your body language acts instinctively to attract people to you.
Your search for identity will never be a solitary, introspective one. Public appreciation and power are important to you. You need constant interaction with and approval from people. You are likely to find the most satisfying ties with groups whose goals are humanitarian and ideological, whether the groups are social or political or educational. But before you do, you may discover in youth and early adulthood many facets of yourself through creations that are not so tightly bound to an organized group. And it is imperative for you to createa work of art, a child, an intrigue, a love affair, a partnership, a principle.
Your need for people may reflect an inner insecurity. That self-image, which you experience as constantly changing, may not be actualized until you see it mirrored in peoples responses; a positive one reinforces your natural enthusiasm, a negative one may induce self-pity. Your need for creation may also be tied to the building of an ego. You seek success, and are very likely to get your lions share of it in your lifetime, through what you do, not through what you are. For what you do allows you to know and then to be who you are. You expect your creations and your things to bestow honor upon you; they are not merely natural or spontaneous expressions.
