THE CUSP-BORN SCORPIO

Are you really a Scorpio? If your birthday falls during the third to fourth week of October, at the beginning of Scorpio, will you still retain the traits of Libra, the sign of the Zodiac before Scorpio? And what if you were born late in Novemberare you more Sagittarius than Scorpio? Many people born at the edge, or cusp, of a sign have difficulty determining exactly what sign they are. If you are one of these people, heres how you can figure it out, once and for all.

Consult the cusp table on the facing page, then locate the year of your birth. The table will tell you the precise days on which the Sun entered and left your sign for the year of your birth. In that way you can determine if you are a true Scorpioor whether you are a Libra or Sagittariusaccording to the variations in cusp dates from year to year (see also page 17).

THE ASCENDANT: SCORPIO RISING

Could you be a double Scorpio? That is, could you have Scorpio as your Rising sign as well as your Sun sign? The tables on pages 8-9 will tell you Scorpios what your Rising sign happens to be. The Ascendant, or Rising sign, is placed on the 1st house in a horoscope, of which there are twelve houses. The 1st house represents your response to the environmentyour unique response. Call it identity, personality, ego, self-image, facade, come-on, body-mind-spiritwhatever term best conveys to you the meaning of the you that acts and reacts in the world. It is a you that is always changing, discovering a new you. Your identity started with birth and early environment, over which you had little conscious control, and continues to experience, to adjust, to express itself. The 1st house also represents how others see you. Has anyone ever guessed your sign to be your Rising sign? People may respond to that personality, that facade, that body type governed by your Rising sign.

Your Ascendant, or Rising sign, modifies your basic Sun sign personality, and it affects the way you act out the daily predictions for your Sun sign. If your Rising sign is indeed Scorpio, what follows is a description of its effects on your horoscope. With Scorpio on your Ascendant, that is, in the 1st house, the planets rising in the 1st house are Mars and Pluto, the rulers of Scorpio. You have here the tremendous energy of Mars and the implacable avenging power of Pluto, which together make you a tower of forcefulness in whatever you choose to do. Mars accentuates action; Pluto signifies spiritual development. These tendencies combined for Scorpio, an emotional, fixed sign, could make you a bold crusader for truth, a relentless foe of injustice. On the other hand, this placement could make you bitter, sarcastic, vengeful, and incapable of controlling destructive impulses toward the self as well as society.

Control is a byword for Scorpio Rising. Whether it is control over the self, control over others, or control through others, you have a deep-seated need to dominate. You are a great strategist when it comes to gaining social control. Among your arsenal of weapons are such contradictory traits as subtlety, intensity, selfishness, self-sacrifice, ruthlessness, possessiveness, aloofness, impulsiveness, determination. Closely linked to your need for control is your love of power. You have enough passion and endurance to attain power, as well as to use it to change the environment in accord with your inner dictates.

As much as you like to dominate, you hate being dominated. You will go to great lengths to escape being trapped in a chafing relationship or situation. People often see you as perverse and self-seeking, ready for flight or fight. You also hate to lose, whether your conquest is a lover, an argument, or a cause. Your anger and jealousy are well known. You get deeply involved, though your social manner is not very personal. You have a penchant for solitude and secretiveness, which make people think you are introverted and shyuntil they get to know you.
