Dedicated to my greatest hero; it is said that there are some
who bring a light so great into the world
that even after they have gone the light remains.
You were one of those.
Forever in my heart, Daddy...
A life lived in fear is a life half-lived.

If you want something you've never had, you must be willing to do something you've never done.
~Thomas Jefferson, 3 rd President of the United States of America
I t was just after two oclock in the morning when my phone rang. I was instantly awake, knowing, in the very pit of my anxious stomach, who was calling and why. We think you should come. Now. said the voice on the other end of the line, and I closed my eyes for a moment and prayed for the strength to get through the next few hours. I dressed as fast as I could while I waited for the friend with a car who had volunteered to drive me to my destination and I think we broke every speed limit in the city on the way across town, trying to make sure that I got there in time.
My father was heavily sedated. Everyone who had been with him that night had finally gone to bed, exhausted from coping with hours of his overwhelming agitation before the sedatives had kicked in and they had called me. And so it was that I was the only one awake in those early hours as I held his frail hand in the darkness, watching his breaths grow further and further apart until, eventually, they stopped altogether.
