Nick Hall, Ph.D. is a medical scientist and professional speaker, who for over 30 years has conducted groundbreaking studies linking the mind and body. This research has been published in over 150 periodicals and featured by the national and international media, including CBS 60 Minutes, the BBCs Nova series, and the Emmy Award-winning program Healing and the Mind, aired by PBS. He also has been the recipient of two prestigious Research Scientist Development Awards, which the National Institutes of Health grants only to the top scientists in the United States. Nick is no stranger, as well, to the more pragmatic aspects of dealing with change and with making difficult choices. After earning his way through college wrestling alligators and milking rattlesnakes, he worked as an intelligence-operative for the U.S. Government. He also led a National Geographic-sponsored expedition to the West Indies, where he studied mass-stranding behavior in whales. While working in the islands, he endured the Marxist revolution in Grenada and the La Soufriere volcano eruption in St. Vincent. His practical insights for coping with change and adversity have been shaped over a span of nearly four decades. For example, in 1968, he became the first person to complete the grueling Baja 1,000 mile off-road race on a bicycle; while in 2006, he completed WaterTribes Ultimate Florida Challenge in a Kayak. This 1200 mile nautical race, which included a 40-mile portage, has been described by Times of London as, the most dangerous small boat race in the world. At his Saddlebrook Resort headquarters in Florida, Dr. Hall presents highly successful workshops and motivational programs for some of Americas leading corporations. Ive drawn from so many sources of information and personal experiences in putting this book together that I am at a loss to know where to begin in thanking all those who have contributed to this effort. The one exception is my loving wife, Hazel, whose contributions clearly outshine all others. Her patience and understanding while I was researching this topic kept me grounded and sane. This ncluded keeping the home fires stoked while I was off on some adventure, testing the ideas discussed in this book. Also my two daughters, Rachele and Stephanie, each of whom has performed alligator wrestling shows with their dad at the Black Hills Reptile Gardens in South Dakota. Theyve also shared cross-country motorcycle and bicycle adventures with me, which is how I learned that the rules of dealing with stress change when loved ones are involved. Im also indebted to the wisdom and example set by my mother, Eileen, who, for 93 years, behaved like a woman in her twenties, thereby, serving as an inspiration for all who encountered her. Finally, my stepfather, Max, whose hard work and dedication to his adopted family were unparalleled.
A large number of people have assisted with the preparation of the material used in writing this book. Im especially indebted to Barbara Furtek, who expertly set about the task of correcting the numerous grammatical blunders and misspellings, which were scattered about draft copies of this effort. Id also like to acknowledge her astute ability to spot statements with meanings other than the ones intended, along with the literary solutions. In addition, Betty LeDoux-Morris, a Certified Meeting Professional, has been instrumental in forging the corporate connections that have kept this book grounded in pragmatism.
Others have helped shape some of the described concepts. The conclusions of Dr. Irv Dardik, expressed in his Wavenergy Theory, have made me realize that stress is good for you and that it is only when stress is unabated by recovery that health will be impaired. Dr. Phil Haydens research and insights into the ways elite FBI agents cope with stress under extreme circumstances have taught me that academic models have little relevance when you find yourself in a rapidly failing environment. I am particularly grateful for having had the opportunity to work with Dr. Jim Loehr, whose insights pertaining to stress and performance in athletes have demonstrated that there are viable strategies which can be employed to prevent stress from impacting performance. Some of the strategies involving exercise and acting are based upon those insights. Im particularly grateful for the recommendations of Dr. Gerald Iwerks, a professional mediator, whose discussions on the subject of conflict have proved invaluable in formulating the strategies for coping with adversity. Dr. Blake Anderson served as a consultant and contributor to the audio program Prescription for Burnout, parts of which have been incorporated into this book. Also, Paula Stahil, who edited an earlier edition of this book, titled Orchestrating the Mind and Body. Finally, I am indebted to theprofessional insights of Geneele Crump, a highly skilled Licensed Clinical Social Worker, who has made valuable suggestions pertaining to the recommended behavioral-interventions and has assisted with the editing and organization of the chapters.
