DISCLAIMER
This book is intended for educational purposes only, and the information contained in it is not intended as a replacement for veterinary attention should this be needed. Before using crystal healing, always have the animals health checked by your vet.
When Heilkunst, the true system of Western medicine, was founded in the late eighteenth century by the German physician, Dr Samuel Hahnemann, he gifted us with the identification of a scientific way of understanding the dynamic nature of disease. This radical act shifted the prevailing concept of disease as something material and chemical to an appreciation for its energetic and dynamic reality. It then follows from this insight that any attempts to influence the state of health or disease of a living being have to be done on the dynamic level for it to be a true restoration of health. To treat otherwise would only palliate or suppress the external manifestations of that internal dis-ease.
The authors of this book have an appreciation of Heilkunst, the Healing Art, and have long been doing excellent work in the use of flower essences in helping animals to heal. Now, in this new work, they are sharing with us the ways in which crystals may be used in a new light, enabling us to better discern their action and the role they can play in a true system of medicine based on clear principles. We need these insights so that we can fully develop the use of crystals to benefit our companion animals.
We know that animals are energetic in nature, as are all living beings. However, as easy as it is for us to recognise that they have energetic properties of their own, we often neglect to appreciate that they also have an innate ability to pick up on the energy of others. We see this more obviously when someone comes into the homeif there is no resonance, the animal may do a disappearing act, or show their displeasure in more aggressive ways. If the person visiting is someone with whom they do find a resonant energy, then they tend to stay and ask for attention and affection.
We also need to understand an animals ability to absorb the energy of the people with whom they share their lives. It is quite common to find that an animal is suffering the dis-ease of the family or of a particular family member. At its most dramatic, animals have taken on the same physical manifestations of disease as their people, including cancer, anxiety disorders, respiratory problems, skin problems and more.
On the pages of this book, where Gael and Martin so ably teach us how to use one of natures most ancient gifts in the healing of our beloved animals, we are also given the keys to unlock our own insight and powers of discernment. In a natural and wholistic way, these tools will enable us to see more clearly and understand more deeply. We are empowered when we work with our animals on their healing, and help them to lead happier, more productive lives. And in helping our animals to heal, often we are healed as well.
Patty Smith-Verspoor, DVHH, RHom, FHCH, BscEd, is Co-Chair of the Department of Veterinary Studies for the Hahnemann Center for Homeopathy and Heilkunst. She serves on the Board of Directors for the National United Professional Association of Trained Homeopaths (NUPATH) in Canada, and is editor of Heilkunst: the Journal for the Exploration of Hahnemanns Whole Remedial Art. She is co-author, with Rudolf Verspoor, of the ground-breaking book Homeopathy Renewed. She additionally writes for several national and international holistic journals. She lives in Ottawa, Canada, with her three rats, two birds, West Highland White Terrier and quarterhorse filly.
Many people are surprised when we tell them animals can be treated with crystals. They often seem to think that crystals are only to be used for meditation or other esoteric practices, which may not be of any interest to them. Somehow the idea that you can sit on the floor with a dog and a crystal, or take a crystal out to the stableyard, surprises them: it seems like a clash of two incompatible worlds, the practical and the mystical. Its true that crystals can be used for esoteric purposes, but at the end of the day they are practical healing tools, gifts that Mother Nature has left us to use to enhance our lives and those of anyone we care for.
This book is also a practical tool. It is intended to provide you, the animal enthusiast or caregiver, with a simple yet effective resource that can help you improve the health, vitality, happiness and quality of life of the animals you look afterfrom a mouse to an elephant and anything in between! Crystals are effective, easily available and generally inexpensive, and anyone can learn to use them.
Everything in nature is deceptively simple, yet for many years crystal healing has remained veiled in myth and magic. The animals do not see it this way. We first became interested in the idea of crystals for animals when our own animals brought crystals into the house, especially one little dog who took a great interest in a particular type of quartzite rock, chose his own pieces from the garden, and had them arranged in his bed at all times. For him, it was the most natural and normal thing in the world. He, among others, taught us that our animal friends are not just aware of the healing resources of our living planet; they are invariably more in tune with them than we are! We dedicate this book to our teachers, the animals. We are only learning; they KNOW.
Crystal healing is by no means a New Age phenomenonfar from it! As tools for healing, as religious icons, as philosophical symbols and technological devices, crystals permeate the entire span of human history, forming an undercurrent that unites all societies and cultures across the planet. Crystals are completely fundamental to our daily lives, without most of us even being aware of it.
We know from archaeological records that at least as far back as 25,000 B C , crystals were already drawing human attention in the shape of colourful stones that may have had significance as religious or talismanic objects. Based on what we know of the healing powers of crystals, we can assume that even the earliest and most primitive peoples valued them for their medicinal uses. The Babylonians, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Persians, the Aztecs, the Tibetans, the Aborigines of Australia and the many peoples of Africa, South, Central and North America all used crystals, which also feature heavily in Buddhist, Tantric and Ayurvedic thought. Many of these cultures had, and still have, highly evolved systems of healing involving crystals, both on the physical plane and as spiritual alchemy of the soul. Crystals have been venerated in all these cultures, not only for their beauty in art, jewellery and architecture, but also as a key to obtaining enhanced levels of health, vitality and deep attunement to nature. In our own society the deeper qualities of many minerals and gemstonesamong them gold, platinum, rubies, diamonds, emeralds and sapphirescontinue to be reflected and honoured in the way we prize and treasure them, even though most of us have forgotten their real value.
