New Lives For Old

For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new l ives.
Romans 6 :4

A fter packing away the Christmas tree, the lights and other festive goodies, it seems as though there is always a closet or two beckoning to be cleaned out and cleared of unwanted clutter. I never look forward to the task, but know that if I ignore it, the masses behind the closed door will only become harder to conceal and more difficult to clean in the future.

This particular post-Christmas season was no different. It was the same closet as before, the giant one that we like to call the hidden room at our house. I couldnt understand how it had gotten so cluttered and filled with junk so quickly! It seemed as though I had just cleaned it out yesterday. Yet, there it was. And, there was no denying the mess that I had created by shoving things away, not dealing with them, and just expecting them to magically disappearout of sight, out o f mind.

Do you have sins in your life that are like that? They seem to be the same ones youve struggled with before. And yet, you often simply close the door on themhoping they will be hidden and magically dis appear.

Just like behind the closet door, our sinful behavior doesnt magically disappear, and it isnt as hidden as we like to think (Cant you see the sock sticking out underneath the door?). The Holy Bible says, I am watching them closely, and I see every sin. They cannot hope to hide from me ( Jeremiah 16 :17).

I dont always enjoy the process of cleaning out the closet, but I always love the result. The Holy Bible says, Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, I will confess my rebellion to the Lord. And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone ( Psalm 3 2:5).

This prayer I will pray for you in the coming year, that you will hide Gods Word in the closet of your heart, rather than sin. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you ( Psalm 119:11).

May you have the best year youve ever had in you r life.

Stubborn Stains

Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious tr ouble.
Proverbs 28 :14

D o you have a stubborn streak? Romans 2 :5 tells us, But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when Gods righteous judgment will be rev ealed.

When King Saul turned away from God and refused to follow His plan, the prophet, Samuel, was sent with this message for him, Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the Lord, he has rejected you as king ( I Samuel 15:23).

Gods Word reminds us repeatedly that in order to walk in Gods favor, we must be obedient to Him. We must yield our will to His.

There is no place for stubbornness in a yielded life. A stubborn heart will prevent us from experiencing Gods best. A life bent on sin and having ones own way will end in defeat and destr uction.

Proverbs 2 8:14 tells us, Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious tr ouble.

Ask God to reveal any areas of stubborn sin in your life. Then, ask Him to help you yield those areas to Him.

May you repent, and may God become master over any area of rebellion that may be invading or controlling your life today.

Real Repentance

For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. Theres no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual d eath. 2 Corinthians 7 :10

R epe ntance. Its not enough to feel bad when we do something wrong. When the bad feeling wears off, were right back into our sin. Thats worldly sorrow. Thats the kind of sorrow that leads to death. Why? Because that kind of sorrow doesnt bring about change in our lives.

Godly sorrow is different. Godly sorrow changes us. It says, Im not going to do this anymore. Godly sorrow holds no regret, but is joyful about the change that God has wrought in our lives. It is overwhelmed by the goodness of God, and it is focused on Him and on ly Him.

Real repentance is a turning away from sin. It is a decision to stop sinning. As Jesus said, Go and sin no more ( John 8 :11).

Do you really long to be close to Christ? Then, dwell on His goodness, repent of your sin, and make it a priority to put Him first in every area of you r life.

Boundless Generosity

I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8 :8-9

T he example of generosity set by Christ is matchless. Anything and everything we give in return doesnt come close to com paring.

Yet, Paul challenges the Church at Corinth to finish what theyve started in the way of generous giving, and he reminds them that it is much more blessed to give than to receive. He reminds us that we cannot outgi ve God.

Malachi 3 :10 tells us, Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to stor e it.

When we honor God and are generous in givingnot just with moneyHe will bl ess us.

My father tells the story of my grandfather who owned a gas station, which he kept open on Sundays back in the early 1950s in South Carolina. Grand-Daddy claimed he had to stay open on Sundays to make ends meet. My father put a challenge to Grand-Daddy, that if he closed on Sundays and didnt make enough money, my father would make up the difference out of his own pocket. Grand-Daddy accepted the cha llenge.

By the end of the month, Grand-Daddy had made more money than in any month before. He never opened on Sunday again.

May you put our generous God to the test. He will never let yo u down.

Perfect Gifts

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he cre ated.
