Chapter 1. The Three Great Gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh
E very year the Western world celebrates what they believe to be the time of the birth of Jesus Christ, even though the date that most people celebrate in December is unscriptural. However, in this ebook I just want to look at the actual gifts that were given to the baby Jesus, from the wise men, which are often mentioned in relation to His birth, what their significance is, the spiritual parallels, and what they mean for us as Christians.
A true Christian believes that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, having lived in eternity as a spirit being with God the Father. We can read that in the Gospel of John:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (John 1:15)
Then continuing in verse 14:
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
God the Father and the Word were two God Beings, who existed in eternity. They have a plan for mankind, and that plan involved one of them becoming a mortal man, who would die for the sins of all people. This meant being born in the flesh, from a woman. God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus Christ, while she was still a virgin.
We should start in Matthew 1:1825 where we see the account of Mary becoming pregnant by the Holy Spirit:
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us. Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
