Day 1
Total Devotion

From the mass tragedy of 9/11 to the latest headline-grabbing acts of violence, terrorists of every creed and shade of crazy aim to disrupt our lives. Whether imported or homegrown, they want to make our every moment feel uneasy. Most of all, they plot to turn us against each other. If hatred wins and love loses, without a doubt they have succeeded.

Dont ever mistake acts of terrorism for devotion . What terrorists do is deviation from everything right and good. They think their twisted brand of wickedness is worth killing foreven dying for. They couldnt make any clearer why Jesus is worth living for.

Read Romans 12:1

What kind of devotion does Jesus want from you?

Terrorists ooze such damaged commitment that you can watch what they do, then do the exact opposite:

You arent trying to gain heaven as a suicide bomber. God offers you eternal life as a free gift.

You dont burn with cruel inhumanity. Your commitment to Jesus overwhelms you with compassion.

You dont work for a distant, menacing God. You lovingly serve the Savior who walked in your shoes and died in your place.

You dont unleash death on the innocent. You usher the guilty into life.

Total devotion isnt a one-shot mission. Its an attitude you can adopt this instant and apply moment by moment. Its gratefully offering your whole self to God. Its clinging tight to the Lord of the universe and letting him rule over every inch of your existence.

When you consider what Jesus has given youfrom breath to eternal life and every good thing in betweenyou know in your heart he deserves nothing less.

Youre not a dead fool. Youre a living sacrifice. Thats total devotion.

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrificethe kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.

Romans 12:1 N L T

Day 2
Snooze and Lose

As Sophia snoozed her wake-up alarm for the third time, her mom rapped on her bedroom door and yelled to see if she was awake. Its eight oclock, Sophia. We leave for church in half an hour!

Sophia dragged herself to the kitchen, erupting in her usual whine. Why do we go to church? Cant we take some Sundays off? You and Dad should go by yourselves. Sophia thought Sunday school was okay, a chance to chat with her friends while the teacher blathered on. But wasting a second hour in a worship service made her crazy mad. Sophia said church band sounded like a cow moaning in laborand she couldnt figure out why the pastor got so worked up about stuff she cared nothing about.

One of these days , Sophia told herself, Im staying home. And Im not going back .

Read Colossians 1:10

Why would anyone want to please God in every way?

Before we decide to trust God for ourselves, stuff like knowing, following, and enjoying God feels about as important as a stash of old Happy Meal toys lost in a backyard sandbox. Instead of recognizing God as King of the universe, we want to rule our own lives. We might even strike a pose as open rebels against God.

You probably know the facts on how God hatched a plan to bring us back to himself. Even though we deserve death for our sins (Romans 6:23), Christ suffered that punishment for us. He died on the cross in our place so we can be forgiven (Colossians 1:2123).

Being convinced of those facts gives you enormous reason to choose total devotion to Jesus. You admit, Ive been wrong, God. I thought you werent worth it. I disobeyed you. You become Gods friend. I accept the gift of forgiveness and life you offer through Christ . Suddenly it makes sense to follow him every moment of every day, because youve realized the infinite value of living close to him. After all, if hes rescued you and brought you into his kingdom of love, he deserves every bit of your life.

So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.

Colossians 1:10

Day 3
To Die or to Die

Hurry up!

Aidens toes nudged toward the cliff edge. It looked like a mile down to the swirling river below, but truthfully, the rock where he stood was just high enough to cause a mild episode of heart pounding and hyperventilating. Unless the water was running low. Which it was.

Jumping the cliff was the initiation required to hang out with the older neighborhood kids. The test started as a joke. One by one a select group of guys and girls had braved the leap.

If Aiden didnt jump, he would be banished to the group of kiddos not allowed to tag along, meaning the choice to jump was between potential physical harm on one hand and certain social death on the other. And if Aidens parents found out he was cliff jumpingwell, that would end in another form of death.
