One of the three legacies that outlive a humanbeing is writing a book. The other two are: having a child andplanting a tree. Of these three legacies, writing a book is a tasknot everybody can do or be endowed with. In the context of thisphilosophy, I salute the ingenuity and scholarly ability of SundayAkande who passes in my judgement as a budding writer andthinker.
Asking me to writethe Foreword to this book is honourable and very pleasing to me. Itis on this note I accepted the call.
The book, PoorDad, RICH CHILD, is as alluring as it is antithetical. From thepremise of the title of the book, one could on the surface takeimagine the contents of the book as one of the ones that dot manybooks. However, my navigation through the thirteen-chaptered bookgave me a somewhat education in another and unusual perspective. Onthis note, I salute the creative approach of the writer.
Success andFailure of course are two sides of a coin in life. Sunday Akande, through his book, educates and motivates every reader of this bookon these two phenomena. Incidentally, while all men desire success,no man can as well boast of not experiencing failure in lifejourney. Therefore, Sunday Akande teaches some motivationalconcepts like goal setting, relationship through success, mentoring, and discovering your gifts and talents.
Having clinicallyexposited the face value of the contents of the book, I cannot waita minute longer to recommend the book to all: students, teachers, educationists, clergy men, motivational speakers. Once again, Icommend the brilliance in Sunday Akande.

PROLOGUE
SUCCESS, A CHOICE
Destiny is not amatter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to bewaited for, it is a thing to be achieved.
William JenningsBryan
I say , without any fear of contradiction, that nothinghappens to man by accident.
According toLongman Dictionary of Contemporary English, the phrase byaccident means in a way that is not planned or intended. Inother words, anything that happens by accident has happened becausethere was no plan or intension for it. This means such anoccurrence will bring along a surprise because no thought of ithappening ever came across our mind.
But does anythinghappen without any plan at all? NO is the answer! Nothing and Imean NOTHING, not even a non-living thing, can make anything happenwithout something or someone pushing or pulling it.
Two of the threeLaws of Motion as stated by Sir Isaac Newton are as follows:
1. Action andreactions are equal but opposite.
2. An objectwill continue to be in its state of rest or in a straight line, unless it is acted upon by a force.
The first law (asabove) suggests that an action is directly proportional, or exactlyequal, to reaction. It explains the fact that a reaction one getsfrom an exercise or work cannot be bigger or more than the actionone imputed in the first place. This law also explains that anaction and a reaction may be equal but they are opposite; that is,one of course a reaction, is a product of the other (action).
The second law (asabove) says that a body or an object, either living or non-living,will remain fixed at a spot if no force pushes or pulls it. On theother hand, an object or a body, either living or non-living willgo in a straight line if nothing stops it.
I love the secondlaw so much because it is the reason behind success and failure inlife. So many people think success will come accidentally if theysit at a spot. As a matter of fact, he who believes so has alreadyfailed. The reason is simple: theoretically, if you dont move youwill die. Imagine a person standing still on a highway or afootpath, vehicles or other moving creatures will collide withhim/her. He will soon collapse, be trodden on and die. It ispertinent to say at this juncture that death before success istotal failure.
It is high timeyou understood that everything a man does or becomes in life is achoice. That your parents were/are a failure does not mean youshould be one. You have a choice. Success is a choice. Failure is achoice. Sickness is a choice. Poverty is a choice. Death before oldage is a choice. Everything is a choice! Those that have made it inlife have done so because they made up their mind to be successfulin life. Those that are in failure are satisfied with it; if theyare not, they will get out of it. Before creation, the Biblerecords in Genesis 1:1-2 that darkness covered everywhere. It wasGod who made the choice of creating light and He commanded LETTHERE BE LIGHT! in verse 3 of that chapter. If God did not makethe choice, nothing would have been created.
Life answers tocommands. The new Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English(LDOCE) defines the word command as an order that should beobeyed. The same dictionary defines the word order as theway that several things, events, etc, are arranged or put on alist, showing whether something is first, second, third, etc.In other words, life obeys or respects those who are orderly inmaking plans.
It is necessary tostate it clearly that failure is a product of a CONSTANT whilesuccess is a product of VARIABLES.
FAILURE isdirectly proportional to a CONSTANT
(Where CONSTANT =doing NOTHING)
AND
SUCCESS isdirectly proportional to VARIABLES
(Where VARIABLES =laws of SUCCESS).
CHAPTER1
SUCCESS, A JOURNEY
The secret ofgetting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started isbreaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small manageabletasks, and then starting on the first one.
Mark Twain
Different definitions have been said of success bydifferent persons. The definitions are different and depend on thesubject under discussion; for instance, a definition may be said tosuit academic success, another may be said to go for financialsuccess and so on.
In this context,we shall be looking at a generalized definition which encompassesall forms of success academic, financial, marital, career-wise,etc.
The new edition ofLDOCE says that success is the achieving of something you havebeen trying to do. Despite the fact that the definition is not myfavourite, I like something about it. The verb phrase have beentrying in the definition is dropping a hint that SUCCESS IS AJOURNEY. Success is not what a man can acquire a day. One does notjust wake up in the morning and say Today, I want to besuccessful. One does not buy a car and say I am now successful.Of course those are a small part of success, but look at what Paulthe Apostle said in his letter to the Philippians, chapter3:12-14:
Not as though Ihave already attained, either were already perfect: but I followafter, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehendedof Christ Jesus.
