Psychic Research and the Healing Process: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Psychic Research and the Healing Process" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The healing process is usually described within the framework of physics, chemistry, and cellular physiology. Just as the role of the observer is generally ignored in the formulations of science, so the role of the healer and the healed is ignored in modern medicine. This essay, chapter 14 of Psychic Exploration, examines the role of the healer-healed in 10 basic processes in healing: diagnosis, manual healing, self-healing, chemical agents, anesthesia, surgery, bacteriostasis, action-at-a-distance, the guide, and regeneration. The full volume of Psychic Exploration can be purchased as an ebook or paperback version from all major online retailers and at cosimobooks.com.

Note to the Readers: This mini-ebook was earlier published as part of a compilation of essays in Psychic Exploration: A Challenge for Science, Understanding the Nature and Power of Consciousness (originally published in 1974; reprinted by Cosimo Books in 2011), edited by Apollo 14 astronaut, moonwalker, and founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Edgar Mitchell.

Each of the 28 chapters in the original Psychic Exploration was dedicated to a specific field of research in parapsychology, written by leading experts and scientists, such as Stanley Krippner, Montague Ullman, Charles Tart, Russel Targ, William Roll, Jean Houston, Willis Harman, and many others. With the advent of ebook technology, we feel that each of these unique essays deserve attention as a dedicated mini-ebook in addition to the complete version of Psychic Exploration.

If you prefer exploring specific subjects or authors, below is a complete list of the individual essays, all available as mini-ebooks. On the other hand, if you are interested in all of the essays and the field of parapsychology in general, we encourage you to read the original Psychic Exploration, available at online bookstores in both paperback and ebook versions.

However you decide to read these essays, we know you will receive a thorough introduction to psychic research in its many forms, from what is now considered a classic in the parapsychology genre. Part of the proceeds of this mini-ebook will benefit the Institute of Noetic Sciences (www.noetic.org).

SUMMARY

The healing process is usually described within the framework of physics, chemistry, and cellular physiology. Just as the role of the observer is generally ignored in the formulations of science, so the role of the healer and the healed is ignored in modern medicine. This chapter examines the role of the healer-healed in 10 basic processes in healing: diagnosis, manual healing, self-healing, chemical agents, anesthesia, surgery, bacteriostasis, action-at-a-distance, the guide, and regeneration. Personal observations of the famed Brazilian healer Arigo illustrate the principles that emerge from this examination.

INTRODUCTION

Everyone is familiar with the process of healing. Ones finger may be cut; it is then treated by some local custom, and in a number of days it has healed. In the case of minor skin injuries there is some scientific knowledge of the healing process, because much of it can be observed under the microscope. We can describe this process in laymans terms.

When a foreign object cuts through tissue, many of the chemicals normally sealed inside a cell are released locally, and these chemicals are partly responsible for calling into action a complex repair process. In addition to chemical release, injury causes an established local electrical pattern to be disorganized, which serves to trigger the alarm system that calls out the repair workers. The combination of chemical and electrical alarm signals works in a way as yet unknown to bring about the following sequence of repair, or healing, processes.

First, the injury causes blood flow, or bleeding. When such injury occurs in a hemophiliac, the process that leads to blood clotting is defective, and the person may bleed to death for lack of a chemical component of the clotting process. However, in the normal person fibrinogen is triggered to go from a particle state to fiber state. The result is that fibrin is spun out across the bleeding area very much like a spider web. This acts like a sieve, trapping the red and white blood cells, and causes the liquid state serum to coagulate into a jell state. The entire process of blood coagulation takes about 10 minutes. Then the hole in the tissue caused by injury is filled with a jell-like blood clot. Within this blood clot the true healing process begins.

The white blood cells move about through the clot-jell scooping up tissue debris and bacteria. Antibodies are released that begin to neutralize toxic effects of other bacteria. Other large cells begin to throw out filament bridges from one wall of the injury area to the other wall, and these can be seen later as scar tissue. The elements of the scar tissue in fact stitch together the tissue defect over a period of a week. Within this connective tissue stitch work, blood vessels begin to tunnel, severed nerves bridge the injury gap, and so on. The skin epithelium grows out from the edge of the wound to cover the scar tissue. If all of these myriad processes carry out their assembly-line repair tasks, the healing process will be essentially complete in 9 to 10 days. This is what everyone knows about the simplest type of healing process. It is important to remember that the entire process was conceived, organized, and carried out by nature without mans knowledge or cooperation.
