Experience a profound shift in consciousness, one meditative step at a time.
A Year to Enlightenment is a first-of-its-kind, holistic approach to a complete meditation experience. It is divided into 365 dayseach composed of an Insight, a Reflection, and a Meditationwhich will help awaken your intuition, insight, and inner knowledge to reach that state sought after by mystics and seekers throughout the ages: enlightenment.
Moving gradually from simple relaxation into the deepest, most profound areas of meditation and spirituality, A Year to Enlightenment encourages you to read only one page at a time, practicing a single technique until a personal insight arises. Only then do you turn the page and go on to the next, as your own insights become your personal teacher. Though former monk E. Raymond Rock uses Buddhist meditation principles, A Year to Enlightenment is nondenominational. People of all religions and at any level of spiritual development can use it to:
  • Awaken natural creativity and begin your new life
  • Become more loving, generous, and tolerant
  • Show courage in trying situations
  • Find meaning and significance in your life
  • Change aspects of your life and personality for the better
  • Reduce stress and worry
  • Eliminate fear and uncertainty
  • Find acceptance and love
  • Feel better mentally and physically
  • Deepen and improve your relationships with others
  • Reach your maximum potential

  • The most revolutionary aspect of this practical book is not how it awakens each practitioners unique intuition, but how it uses that intuitive event as a signal to move forward. Those who follow the day-by-day program can find an endless stream of love to enrich their lives.

To Janet, who has been with me every step of the way. You held unwaveringly true to our solitary wedding vow, To help each other find Truth in this lifetime. Your life reflects the deepest meaning of true friendship.

Bhante Henepola Gunaratana (Bhante G), who teaches what he is: love. And Bhante Rahula, welcoming all to the Bhavana Society with loving kindness and compassion.

The late Roshi Kennett, who encouraged me to Go Beyond.
Ajahn Maha Boowa, whose wisdom reminded me to look closely at my arrogance; and Tan Dick and the late Ajahn Pannavaddho, who helped and encouraged me to ordain.
Ajahn Lee and Ajahn Luen, who gave Janet the rare opportunity to live secluded in the forest as a Buddhist nun and meditate night and day on her little bamboo platform.

Sueng Sahn Sunim, whose words still haunt me: Dont know! Dont know! Dont you understand, stupid?
Trungpa Rinpoche, teaching me what an enlightened being actually is, thus destroying my ideas of what one should be.

Jack Kornfield and his book, Living Buddhist Masters, which initially encouraged us to train in Thailand.
The Zen Center in San Franciso where I learned so much about myself.
Jeff Olson of the Velocity Agency, my agent, publishing mentor, and good friend who believed in my book and wouldnt quit.
The hard working people at Career Press/New Page Books: Ron Fry and Michael Pye who made this all possible, Adam Schwartz, Kristen Parkes, Jeff Piasky, Kirsten Dalley, Gina Talucci (my creative editor and ally with boundless patience), Linda Rienecker, Allison Olson, and all the wonderful behind-the-scenes people that an author never has an opportunity to personally thank.
Geoff Huggins, who has always supported my efforts in so many ways.
All who took us under their wings at those precious times when Janet and I were almost penniless and destitute during this amazing journey: Patty, Hugh, Valerie, and Justine; the late Dolores, Jimmy, Danny, and Karen; David, Juanita, Davita, and Chako; Donny, Virginia, Ann, Carrie, and Iris; Aunt Ann and Uncle Jack; Aunt Helen; Rob Drew, Frances Taylor, and Warren Rovetch.
And especially, to Beth and Jerry, Scott, Shellie, and Neil.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you.
    Introduction
People of all beliefs, religions, and perspectives are beginning to ask profound questions: Why are we here? Where did we come from? Where are we going? What are we? Could it be that the answers to our questions are hidden in books somewhere that we havent yet discovered, or are they simply locked up deep in our own hearts, patiently awaiting discovery?
But how do we unlock our hearts? Can ordinary people such as you and I even consider an unbelievable transformation of consciousness, a remarkable change in values so that we act from our true center at all times? Is it possible to comprehend the unimaginable depths of our being and come face-to-face with the Source of all understanding? Can we free ourselves from conflict; can we become enlightened?
Sometimes we find answers through powerful experiences that dramatically change our lives. People recover from traumatic events or serious illnesses, for example, and become mystically transformed, as if they have been dropped into another lifetime, into another existence in which their previous fear-driven, day-to-day struggles disappear in the wake of an incredible, liberating calmness. The unfounded and exaggerated fears that dominated their previous lifetimes now vanish, replaced by inexplicable feelings of purpose and love.
But we neednt wait for traumatic events to improve our lives; we can choose, whenever we wish, to embark upon the ultimate pursuit and the deepest of human experiences, that mysterious state of mind coveted by truth seekers throughout historyspiritual enlightenment. But how do we work toward it and how will it change us?
Indeed, why should we pursue enlightenment at all? And what are the qualifications for beginning this extraordinary quest? More importantly, where will we find a teacher?
A Year to Enlightenment helps you uncover answers to these questions and more in its gently profound, innovative, and clear style, designed to awaken your being to not only the beauty and love all around you, but to the beauty and love you inherently are. Within these mystical pages, you will not only explore your own inner world, but owing to the books very distinctive, interactive quality, you will have an opportunity to understand in your heart what spiritual enlightenment is all about. Instead of merely reading about enlightenment, you will find yourself actually working toward it.
    The Teacher Is...You
Unfortunately, there are no examinations to determine the depth of a spiritual teachers understanding, but if such a test existed, would it measure knowledge or insight? And who has the credentials to judge such a thing? Do we fall in love by studying about love, or does love happen when we are open and vulnerable? Who, then, is qualified to teach?
The one qualified to teach must ultimately be you, the reader, for who else can prove things true to his or her own intuitive heart? Who else would you believe? Teachers can point the way by offering authentic road maps of the hills and valleys they have trekked, they can indicate points of interest and hazards, but you are the one who now must travel if you want to see and touch the wonders of the landscape for yourself. Therefore, A Year to Enlightenment encourages you to develop your own insight and wisdom. If you read the book to accumulate knowledge, as you have read books in the past, this is all that you will achieveknowledgewhich is merely the map. The answers you are seeking lie beyond mundane knowledge in the realms of transcendent insight and wisdom, and because insight and wisdom can never be learned, only experienced, welcome to a unique journey.
The only requirement to find unconditional understanding and love is resolve. It doesnt take a whiz kid or any letters after ones name to work toward enlightenment; it only requires a thirst for truth. You can do it yourself, regardless of your past. Christ received his education in the sparse desert, and the Buddha in a lonely forest. Solitude was their core curriculum. Only their direct experience of the Source of Understanding within instilled the insight and wisdom required to teach others about the many subtle facets in this journey toward Truth, and to ultimately change the world.
    Take Your Time
A Year to Enlightenment was written for brave hearts prepared to embark on an incredible journey. By diving into the waters of spirituality, you have an opportunity to replace your underlying fear and uncertainty with confidence and love. You will find yourself bathed in expansive and universal insights, with each day of the book disclosing a unique, timeless wisdom known by few. This, in turn, surreptitiously opens new, unexplored regions of life and true freedom. If you conscientiously follow the instructions in this comprehensive guide, expect that enlightenment will not be beyond your reach.
