The Compassionate Buddha: summary, description and annotation

The greatest gift is to give people your enlightenment, to share it.

Most people would have probably heard the word Buddha, and again most would equate it to the prince Gautama Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism. This Buddha is well known to people from all parts of the world, given the large global following of Buddhism including the allied school of Zen Buddhism. However, the word Buddha literally means the enlightened one. And moreover, we all have the potential of becoming a Buddha, or rather realising our Buddha nature.

There are several books readily available on Buddhism delving into all aspects historical facts, spiritual teachings, sutras, light reading for the casual reader, and profound discussions for the more cerebrally inclined. Then what is different about this book, what can another author say that has not already been said, you may ask.

Well, this is no ordinary author. This is not another literary scholar who has studied the scriptures, interpreted the knowledge, and presented his or her own understanding of the scriptural texts. This is an enlightened master who has actually, literally, firsthand experienced the veritable truth the same truth that was experienced by Gautama Siddhartha and all other enlightened masters. After all, truth is not of different kinds. There is only one universal truth. And the one who has experienced that truth, has shattered his ignorance forever, broken free of all bondages and delusions, is a Buddha.

Revered Anandmurti Gurumaa is one such living Buddha. So, in effect, a Buddha has written about, not only the Buddha that Gautama Siddhartha was, but the Buddha that resides within all of us. It cannot get more authentic than that! Furthermore, the language is simple as this is a compilation of live discourses given to a gathering of masses from all walks of life.

In addition to this, there are references made to other enlightened masters from all parts of the world, other religions as well. And who can have a better authority to do so than Anandmurti Gurumaa who, as she so emphatically states, is completely religion-less! Hence, it doesnt matter at all whether the reader is a Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Jew or indeed anyone else. This book is meant for all those who want to tread the journey from the Buddha without to within.

Indeed, what can be more valuable than guiding people towards permanent eradication of their ignorance and suffering? And that is what Anandmurti Gurumaa is doing giving the greatest gift to mankind, by sharing her enlightenment.

About the Author

Anandmurti Gurumaa

Her presence is the presence of grace and compassion. Herwords are the words of experiential wisdom. Her pragmatic teachingsinfuse seeking in the non-seeker and intensify the quest of aseeker. She has descended from her abode in the solitude ofmountains to catalyse the spiritual growth of one and all. She is amystic. She is a master. She is known as Anandmurti Gurumaa, mysticmaster of our times. Although no words can ever aptly describe themaster, yet this is an attempt to express theinexpressible.

Anandmurti Gurumaa is a contemporary master who is guidingmillions around the world towards their spiritual growth. Herunique way of explaining the esoteric wisdom makes it easy for evena layman to understand its inherent meaning, and on the other handinspires the intellectual mind to explore uncharted frontiers, thereby giving everyone a chance to learn and evolve.

Talking about life, Gurumaa says, Life is simple. Wecomplicate it. Giving a new perspective to meditation, she says,Meditation is not contemplation. Meditation is not concentration.Meditation is a state of being. Answering questions on severalsuch topics viz. life, mind, meditation, God, love, truth, relationships etc. Gurumaa has brought about fresh insight into theunderstanding of these, so as to unclutter the cluttered mind ofmodern-day man. Her teachings lead to clarity of mind, facilitateharmonious living and show the way to rise above a mundanelifestyle. Most importantly, they make one aware of that dimensionof life about which one is generally oblivious.

Her thought-provoking talks not only answer questions butmake one question oneself too. Question the purpose of ourpursuits. Question our priorities. Question our understanding. In anutshell, they provoke one to think in the right direction so as tolet the answers unfold from within. And dont be surprised if theymake you question your thinking itself!

Never before has man had such easy access to the age-oldscriptures, but yet their core meaning still remains obscurebecause only the realised master can decipher them and impart thewisdom that these scriptures convey. Gurumaa has elaborated variousscriptures extensively in a very lucid manner, unraveling theirdeeper meanings, imparting the message which the mystics intendedto express at different times. These explanations connect theseeker with the source of wisdom, thus taking one forward on thejourney of
self-realisation.

Gurumaa has also devised a vast array of meditation methodsto foster the growth of all those seeking to dive within. Be it abeginner or an advanced aspirant, these methods have been helpfulto people from all walks of life. Almost every method of meditationis aided with mesmerising music which deepens the experience of themeditator. In fact, music is not just a part of meditation methodsdevised by Gurumaa, it is also an integral part of her profoundexpression.

A poet herself, she has put to music the mystical poetry ofseveral mystics like Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, Baba Bulleh Shah,Baba Farid, Guru Nanak Dev and a lot more. Her blissful bhajans arean outpouring of inner celebration. They cast a spell ofenchantment and subdue the incessant wandering of the mind, at thesame time bestowing the experience of divine love. The essence ofall religions is love and I belong to the people who love, saysGurumaa. Thus she defies all religious definitions and considersherself a citizen of world.
