ONE OF THE NEW YORKERS BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR (SO FAR)
A profound exploration of the spiritual power of natureand an urgent call to reclaim that power in everyday life.

Since the beginning of time, humankind has looked upon nature and seen the divine. In the writings of the great thinkers across religions, the natural world inspires everything from fear to awe to tranquil contemplation; God, or however one defined the sublime, was present in everything. Yet today, even as we admire a tree or take in a striking landscape, we rarely see nature as sacred.
In this deeply powerful book, the bestselling historian of religion Karen Armstrong re-sacralizes nature for modern times. Drawing on her vast knowledge of the worlds religious traditions, she vividly describes natures central place in spirituality across the centuries: from the Book of Job to St. Thomas Aquinas, from Lao Tzu to Wordsworth, and from the Stoics to Jainism and beyond. Throughout, she reveals how we have lost our sense of the divine, and how we can get it back.
Armstrong explores the power of silence and solitude, the nature of personal sacrifice and the need to reconnect with sorrow and compassionand how greater contact with and appreciation for nature can help us in unexpected ways. In bringing this age-old wisdom to life, Armstrong shows modern readers how to rediscover natures potency and form a connection to something greater than ourselves.

This book is dedicated, with gratitude and love, to Felicity Bryan, my friend and agent for over thirty years, who quite simply changed my life. Without her I would never have become a writer. But it also bears the indelible stamp of Dan Frank, my American editor, who contributed his inspired intelligence so generously until his untimely death. Both are irreplaceable.

But I owe, as always, an immense debt to my friend and editor Jrg Hensgen at the Bodley Head, whose enthusiasm, commitment and invaluable insights made the editing process a joy. My gratitude too to my editors Louise Dennys at Knopf Canada, Andrew Miller at Knopf in New York and Stuart Williams at the Bodley Head for their friendship and encouragement. At the Bodley Head I would like to thank copy-editor Samuel Wells, proofreader Katherine Fry, indexer Ben Murphy, jacket designer Matt Broughton and publicist Ryan Bowes for their skill and expertise in producing and promoting the book. And many thanks to my loyal agents: Catherine Clark, who has stepped so brilliantly into Felicitys shoes; my Canadian agent Anne McDermid; and, of course, Peter Ginsberg and Andrew Nurnberg, who have both looked after me with such loyalty and affection over the years. And thanks too to Michele Topham at Felicity Bryan Associates, for her unfailing kindness, patience and practical help.
