My connection with Sandra Taylor has been filled with one synchronicity after another. Just when I finished my second book, Everything You Need to Know to Feel Go(o)d, I was asked to write a sample interview about it for use in publicity. To give me an idea of what she was looking for, my publicist at Hay House sent me the interviews that had been done by other authors, and one of those was the one Sandra Taylor did for her book Quantum Success.

The four-page synopsis was so interesting that I carried it around with me for days, reading it over and over again. Finally, it dawned on mewhy keep reading just those few pages when I could get the entire book? I soon found myself devouring the whole thing and experiencing many moments of realization. I was struck by the structure and clarity of Sandys approach, and the facility with which she applied some complex scientific principles to the arena of personal achievement. My son Evan liked the principles, too. Hed come to visit me and had seen Sandys book on the table. Hed been having problems finding the loving relationship that he wanted, so he started reading. He liked Quantum Success so much that he took it with him when he lefteven though I hadnt finished it yet!

One of the things that hit home for me the most was the concept of paradoxical intentsomething Id never seen explained anywhere else. This is the phenomenon whereby we block our attraction because we get so desperate to make our goals happen. Our negative, needy energy actually pushes our desires away. When I read that, I realized I was smack dab in the middle of my own paradoxical intent.

My husband, Mike Ruff, and I had been researching a peptide treatment for AIDS. We had also made some significant advances in developing a vaccine and had formed our own company to continue the research and clinical trials. However, we were having trouble getting the funding necessary to continue our work. It had been so frustratingevery time it seemed as though something good was going to happen, some hurdle appeared and the bar was raised higher. I hadnt realized it, but the more things dragged on, the more desperate I was becoming. After all, Mike and I had spent 20 years on this approach, and it was taking too long.

But in reading Quantum Success, I realized what kind of resistant energy my desperation was creating. Besides making me (and Mike) miserable, it was actually pushing away the longed-for funding! I decided I wanted to talk to Sandy about it, so I contacted my editor, Jill Kramer, who connected us. After several e-mails, Sandy and I finally spoke in September 2006. I remember that it was a beautiful Saturday morning and I was in my hot tub looking at the fall foliage when she called.

It was great to finally connect voice-to-voice. I found out that Sandy was as excited to meet me as I was to meet her. She told me that after seeing me in the movie What the Bleep Do We Know!? she was compelled to buy my first book,
