True, whole prayer is nothing but love.
ST. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPOFor some of us, prayer is one big awkward question mark.
Whatexactly am I supposed to do? Others of us have been around prayer enough that it feels familiar.
We know what to expect from others and whats expected of us. But we may be praying in a way that is actually quite different from what Scripture reveals about prayer. Or we might find ourselves in a season when prayer has become an afterthoughtor something altogether forgotten. Or perhaps weve settled into a good prayer practice, but we could use some fresh inspiration. I always think of readings that steer me in the right direction as train tracks. Scripture, liturgy, prayers of Gods peoplethese serve as rails that guide my heart and mind in the way they ought to go.
They protect me from wandering off into territory that is worthless or dangerous. They are tools of the Spirit to move me in the direction of worship and true life in God, especially when I cannot seem to take a step on my own. Compiling these entries and spending time reflecting on prayers from Christians throughout the centuries has been so good for my soulwonderfully challenging, edifying, and thought-provoking. Ive been astonished at how relatable their words are and comforted by seeing that, for ages, so many people have been wrestling with the same challenges that I wrestle with today. I always seem to need the reminder that having problems in my life and conflict within myself is normal; this is the standard human condition. The important issue is not Am I struggling? but Am I staying close to God through the struggle? Am I depending on Him and finding ways to worship in the midst of all Im experiencing? Seeing these writers throughout history boldly face themselves, demonstrate striking self-awareness, and then present their open hearts (and whole selves) to the powerful presence of God has changed me.
Ive been inspired by their vulnerability and courage. Ive gained wisdom from their insights. Ive found it incredibly helpful to borrow their words to express my heart to God. Ive also been motivated to write my own prayers (some of which are included in this book and marked with my initials, C. M.). one that nourishes your soul, impresses the love and truth of God deeper into your heart, and guides you into a sweeter life of joyful worship and intimacy with our good Father. one that nourishes your soul, impresses the love and truth of God deeper into your heart, and guides you into a sweeter life of joyful worship and intimacy with our good Father.

An Invitation
To pray is to listen to the One who calls you... my beloved child.... Let that voice speak to the center of your being, to your guts, and let that voice resound in your whole being.
HENRI NOUWENThe Father is calling your name. He wants to pull you closer to His heart and reach you with His immense, never-ending love. He wants to change your experience in His world by having you walk through it in deeper relationship with Him. Its what He has had in mind all along.
God created people as an outpouring of the loving relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He wanted to share His abundance and welcome us into His joy and love. We were made for relationship, for close connection with Him, and for worship. He reached out to us first; He began the conversation and invited us to respond. He calls us to know Him in all His wonderto experience His joy and love, His power and goodness, His holiness and graceand respond in prayer. He calls us to open up our hearts to Him and build an intimate relationship with Him.
This extraordinary access to the King of the heavens was not available to our ancestors. The chasm between His holiness and human frailty was too great; temples, sacrifices, and priests were required in any effort to reach Him. But God pursued us with His love by becoming human and giving us grace, allowing us to be fully identified with His faithful Son. Through Jesus, we can freely come to Gods throne in confidence. Through Jesus, we are adopted into the bursting-with-blessings family of God. The Father treats us as He treats Jesus! He firmly roots us in His fierce love, making us secure in a relationship that is based on His choice to lovenot on our efforts.
In this place of abundant love, we get to live a life of prayer. But we often find ourselves retreating from Him. Some days we just dont believe this big-as-the-sky, too-good-to-be-true love. Other times were distracted, too focused on immediate tasks to turn to Him. Often, we feel inferior or clumsy with words, uncertain what our prayers ought to be. All the while God is saying, with His arms open wide, Come.
Hes not looking for perfect prayers. He doesnt want to be shut out of our lives, whatever the reason. He wants relationship.

The Purpose of Prayer
The function of prayer is... to change the nature of the one who prays.
