Don't Forget God When Life Goes Well
Genesis 50:1521
Joseph Reassures His Brothers
15When Josephs brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him? 16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, Your father left these instructions before he died: 17This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly. Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father. When their message came to him, Joseph wept.
18His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. We are your slaves, they said.
19But Joseph said to them, Dont be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21So then, dont be afraid. I will provide for you and your children. And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.
Genesis 50:20
Count on God to work out his plan for you.
Josephs brothers hated him so much they plotted to kill him, but they decided instead to sell the teen into slavery (see Genesis 37). Joseph was taken captive to Egypt, and as a slave he was falsely accused of trying to seduce his masters wife and was tossed in prison. But in time he rose to immense power. In the end he saved all of Egyptand his father and brothersfrom starvation. People had evil plans for Joseph, but through it all God was working for Josephs good.
Your next step: Look for ways that God uses hard times in your life to benefit you or others.
Deuteronomy 8:1018
Do Not Forget the LORD
10When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. 11Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. 16He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17You may say to yourself, My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me. 18But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
