Foreword
A s a traditionally trained board-certified cardiologist, I have always been skeptical of unproven ideas. My natural scientific skepticism has made me very wary of health claims through the years. For example, the so-called scientific data that came out years ago suggesting that eating red meat or eggs could somehow be bad for us seemed questionable to me, particularly because those foods have been a staple of the diets of successful societies for thousands of years. By looking at people like Jack LaLanne, with all of his muscularity, who reached 96 years old in a highly functional condition, it seemed obvious to me that eating carrot sticks and running numerous marathons were not necessarily the keys to longevity. Jack knew the importance of strength training and protein in the diet (although he shunned meat for fish in his later years).
Muscularity, vitality, sensuality, and ultimately the pursuit of youth all appear to be the new direction that the scientific communitymyself includedhas begun to pursue for our patients and ourselves. That is precisely why I feel this book has the power to change so many lives.
The ideas presented here are not only intuitive to most, but many are also substantiated by significant research. Furthermore, authors Marilyn Diamond and Dr. Donald Rock Schnell practice what they preach. Only recently has the mainstream medical community become humbled by doctors and nutritionists flip-flopping over fundamental ideas surrounding carbohydrates versus fats, recalled drugs we once thought to be wonder medicines, and questioned overuse of certain medical procedures. In fact, the scientific community has only recently endorsed many of the nutrients discussed in this book as being highly beneficial. Finally, now that we understand that human hormones tend to deplete themselves over the natural course of our life span (and often starting in our late twenties), we are beginning to study and employ methods to maintain their important effects. The authors of this book have recognized that sobering fact and have utilized their expertise, abundant research, and the available scientific data to present a practical program to extend your bodys ability to achieve its full potential.
Young for Life gets back to basics in a powerfully insightful way, and it reminds us just how wonderful a machine is the optimally nourished human body. It also offers tools to maximize your body-machine. The authors provide easy-to-follow techniques for effective yet moderate exercise, an intuitive and delicious eating plan, and useful advice about embracing our sexuality.
Our bodies are designed to give us many years of strength, vitality, and pleasure. It seems that only when we embrace lifestyles that are counterproductive to the bodys natural design do we lessen the quality and length of our life span. My own observations have shown that the current fads of extreme diets and excessive and destructive exercise leave many of my patients frustrated and less than fulfilled. I hope that they, and you, will experience the passion for life and all of its bounty that Marilyn and Rock express in this book and take from me, their physician and friend, the encouragement to begin truly living again!

A MESSAGE FROM
Marilyn DIAMOND
L ast week I had a massage with a new therapist who knew nothing about me. It was a thorough deep-tissue treatment of my entire body. At the end of the massage, I suddenly had the impulse to ask, How old do you think I am, Kyle?
His response came quickly: Oh, not older than thirty-five.
I have a son whos 45!
The fact is people often say that I look far younger than I am. What matters more to me is to help you see that you, too, can look and feel years younger.
The way I look today is the result of following the secrets I want to share with you in this book. In one workout, I can do multiple sets of squats, deadlifts, and pushups with no problem in record time, because my program has taught me how to do the exercises efficiently. I can work out at the gym, but most often I work out in my home office. This way, even while working, I can repeat my routine throughout the day.
