INTRODUCTION
If youwere asked to name the most translated woman writer in the historyof literature, which names would spring to mind? Jane Austen? Oneof the Bronte sisters? J.K.Rowling?
You maybe surprised to discover that the answer is not a novelist orchildrens storyteller but is believed to be the subject of thisbook, Ellen Gould White, 1827 - 1915. Indeed, she is said the mosttranslated of any American writer.
Born inMaine, USA, she was a vegetarian at a time when this was anunfashionable way to live and it was through her that JosephKellogg was inspired to produce corn flakes, still possibly themost popular breakfast cereal.
She andher husband founded what became known as the Seventh-Day AdventistChurch, a result of Ellens series of over two hundred visions sheclaimed to have experienced and the followers she gained throughher extensive writings.
Seventh-Day Adventists regard her as not just a writer butas a prophetess whose visions were revelations from God. To othersshe is a controversial figure, as any founder of a new sect orreligion will inevitably be. You can read for yourself thecollection of quotations contained within this book and make upyour own mind.
ABOUT HERSELF
"I hadoften sought for the peace there is in Christ, but I could not seemto find the freedom I desired. A terrible sadness rested on myheart. I could not think of anything I had done to cause me to feelsad; but it seemed to me that I was not good enough to enterHeaven, that such a thing would be altogether too much for me toexpect."
*
"Idesired to become a Christian, and prayed earnestly for theforgiveness of my sins. I felt a peace of mind resulting, and lovedevery one, feeling desirous that all should have their sinsforgiven, and love Jesus as I did."
*
"I prizemy seamstress, I value my copyist; but my cook, who knows well howto prepare the food to sustain life, and nourish brain, bone, andmuscle, fills the most important place among the helpers in myfamily."
*
It was not long after the passing of the time in 1844, that myfirst vision was given me. I was visiting a dear sister in Christ, whose heart was knit with mine. Five of us, all women, werekneeling quietly at the family altar. While we were praying, thepower of God came upon me as I had never felt it before. I seemedto be surrounded with light, and to be rising higher and higherfrom the earth. At this time I was given a view of the experienceof the advent believers, the coming of Christ, and the reward to begiven to the faithful.
*
Weak and trembling, I arose at three o'clock in the morning towrite to you. God was speaking through clay. You might say thatthis communication was only a letter. Yes, it was a letter, butprompted by the Spirit of God to bring before your minds thingsthat had been shown me. In these letters which I write, in thetestimonies I bear, I am presenting to you that which the Lord haspresented to me.
*
I do not write one article in the paper expressing merely myown ideas. They are what God has opened before me in visiontheprecious rays of light shining from the throne.
*
In regard to infallibility, I never claimed it; God alone isinfallible. His word is true, and in Him is no variableness orshadow of turning.
*
"As Godhas shown me in holy visionwe heard the voice of God like manywaters, which gave us the day and hour of Jesus'coming."
*
"I speakthat which I have seen, and which I know to be true."
*
I wasshown that the truth once published now, will stand, for it is thetruth for the last days; it will live, and less need be said uponit in future. Numberless words need not be put upon paper tojustify what speaks for itself and shines in its clearness. Truthis straight, plain, clear, and stands out boldly in its owndefense; but it is not so with error. It is so winding and twistingthat it needs a multitude of words to explain it in its crookedform.
ABOUT PARENTS & CHILDREN
"Fixedprinciples of truth are the only safeguard for youth."
*
"Let metell you that the children from their very birth are born to evil.Satan seems to have control of them. He seems to take possession oftheir young minds, and they are corrupted. Why do fathers andmothers act as though a lethargy was upon them? They do notmistrust that Satan is sowing evil seed in theirfamilies."
*
"High andeternal things have little weight with the youth."
*
"Childrenthat have been petted and waited upon, always expect it; and iftheir expectations are not met, they are disappointed anddiscouraged. This same disposition will be seen through their wholelives, and they will be helpless, leaning upon others for aid, expecting others to favor them and yield to them."
*
"Loveexercised while duty is neglected will make children headstrong, willful, perverse, selfish, and disobedient. If stern duty is leftto stand alone without love to soften and win, it will have asimilar result. Duty and love must be blended in order thatchildren may be properly disciplined."
*
"It is agreat thing to be a child of God, and joint-heir with Jesus Christ. If this is your privilege, you will know the fellowship of Christ'ssufferings."
*
"Theyoung are in great danger. Much evil results from their light andtrifling reading. Much time is lost which should be spent in usefulemployment. Some would even deprive themselves of sleep that theymight finish some ridiculous love story."
*
"Theyoung among us are, as a general thing, allied to the world. Butfew maintain a special warfare against the internal foe. But fewhave an earnest, anxious desire to know and do the will ofGod."
*
"Parentsshould have perfect control over their own spirits, and withmildness and yet firmness bend the will of the child until it shallexpect nothing else but to yield to their wishes."
*
"Thereare orphans that can be cared for; but this some will not ventureto undertake, for it brings them work more than they care to do,leaving them but little time to please themselves."
*
"Themother cannot expect her daughter to understand the mysteries ofhousekeeping without education. She should instruct them patiently, lovingly, and make the work as agreeable as she can by her cheerfulcountenance and encouraging words of approval. If they fail once, twice, or thrice, censure not."
CHRISTIAN LIFE & BELIEFS
"It is agreat thing to be a child of God, and joint-heir with Jesus Christ. If this is your privilege, you will know the fellowship of Christ'ssufferings."
*
"Why theChristian life is so difficult to many is because they have adivided heart. They are double-minded, which makes them unstable inall their ways."
*
"Who canmeasure the love Christ felt for a lost world, as he hung upon thecross, suffering for the sins of guilty men? This love wasimmeasurable. It was infinite."
*
"We arenot our own. We do not belong to ourselves. But we have beenpurchased with a dear price. We have cost an immense sum, even thesufferings and death of the Son of God."
*
"IfChristians will obey the instructions given to them by Christ andhis inspired apostles, they will adorn the religion of the Bible, and save themselves much perplexity and severe trials, which theyattribute to their afflictions in consequence of believingunpopular truth."
*
"Religiondoes not consist in making a noise, yet when the soul is filledwith the Spirit of the Lord, sweet, heart-felt praise to Godglorifies him."
