About the Author
Rev. Claire A. Middleton was born in Yonkers, NY and at an early age began to read the bible and question why certain principles were not being taught. She began to explore various denominations and in college she continued to search different religions to find answers to some of the burning questions she had. She received her B.S. degree in Biology from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio and went on to Brooklyn College to receive her MA degree in Urban Education. Rev. Middleton worked as a radio isotope technician and then taught for over thirty years in New York and, later, in Charlotte, NC. She found Religious Science over 25 years ago and immediately began to see the thread of truth she had found in her studies throughout the years. She founded the Center for Spiritual Living COLORS (formerly known as The Church of Light of Religious Science in 2001). It is a member of Centers for Spiritual Living.
Introduction
Life is good. How much you embody that idea is reflected in your life experience. It takes courage to take responsibility for what is going on in your life. If you dont like it, start changing your thinking and you will see changes. Prayer is one of the tools that will assist you in that change.
Prayer
Like most teachings, we are admonished to pray. Prayer is a spiritual practice for many. However, few have been taught how to pray. Affirmative prayer - or Spiritual Mind Treatment and prayer - are the same if we are praying from the standpoint that we are changing our minds about a condition and speaking from the point of view that we are aligning ourselves with some good. It is, however, not a process of bargaining, begging or pleading with God. What I am going to share with you is not new. The process of affirmative prayer is one in which Science of Mind students are taught and use. I have tweaked it through the years. Doctor Holmes, founder of Religious Science, tells us it is open at the top, so for me that says keep studying and keep improving.
Is it the Devil or God that keeps our prayers from being answered? Perhaps it is not the desire that we are expressing, but the manner in which we approach prayer. Some feel that God is outside of them and that they may not be worthy or able to get Gods attention. They are approaching prayer with a sense of separation and creating a sense of doubt as to whether they are being heard. What I know is that we can never be separated from God and that God is within us. When the bible refers to God answering before we speak, it is because God is within our thought process.
We also can enter prayer with doubts as to whether we can have what we are praying about. We may be considering the past, such as our parents and ancestors and what they may have accomplished, and feel that what we are asking for is out of our realm of experience. How could it possibly happen? Or,,again, we question our worthiness. If we are looking at our prayer with doubt, we just defeated the purpose. Jesus teaching is that, it is done unto us as we believe. So if you are doubting, you are not believing and, therefore, you will receive what you really believe.
One of the most powerful ideas that can stop prosperity is feeling guilty for desiring more in your life. You are taught that the kingdom of heaven is after death. Jesus taught that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Stretch and put out your hand. You are walking in it. It is the Fathers will to give you the kingdom and that the kingdom is within arms reach. That kingdom comes forth through your desires that you allow to be imagined and spoken into existence. Let the guilt go. God is desiring to experience its good through you.
We also live in a world of thought and if you are not aware of it, you pick up the beliefs of the people or area that you live in. This is race consciousness. For example, you may be engaging in conversations about the economy being so bad or how you are getting old and your body is acting in a certain way. If that is what you are speaking and believing than that is what you are receiving. You may feel those are the facts, however, when you understand the power of your word and belief and that you can change it, you begin to step into the key of freedom. You can believe whatever you want and speak whatever you want to experience regardless of the appearance or conditions. This is faith in action. We are also told to act as if. We are to act as if what we are affirming already exists. For example, if you desire a new job, get up and dress as if going to the job. When I wanted a new home, it required me to start packing and see myself coming and going from my new home.
Attitude is included in this preparation because we are in a world of vibration and certain things live in certain atmospheres. There are times we dont feel comfortable because of the people and what they are doing in a particular place. We may not want to visit a certain area because we dont feel safe. Those are the vibrations you are picking up. When we complain, our body doesnt feel the same as when we are happy about something. When we are affirming in prayer, we must be at the vibration of having it already. So, taking time to be grateful for what we have helps to bring us to the vibration of what is desired. It brings us to possibility, because we are looking at what we already have received. Affirmative prayers include attitude, gratitude and acting as if you have received the blessing.
Names for God
First lets create a list of names for God. We will use this list for variety and awareness. We want to enter prayer conscious of what we are saying AND NOT BECAUSE WE HAVE MEMORIZED SOMETHING. When a prayer is memorized, it doesnt have the same power because we are no longer paying attention to what is being said and are not conscious of the power we are releasing. So changing the words every now and then makes you pay attention. Some of the names we use for God are:
God, Spirit, Great Spirit, Universe, Universal Mind, It, Isness, I Am, Love, Allah
