INTRODUCTION
Under the Bushel
R ecently the world was reintroduced to a long held (or withheld) secret of dedicated seekers and teachers around the world, as well as many others learning the principles of living a fulfilling life. This secret is the Law of Attraction, that is, what you focus on becomes your reality. What you think about and feel most strongly is what your life becomes because you act on it.
Laws within Quantum Physics explain the Law of Attractionthat all things are vibrations, even thoughts, which have tremendous effect on physical phenomena (there are many links on the web to learn more about this).
As a man thinketh, so he becomes.
Be careful what you wish for.
Mind over matter.
Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.
These ideas have existed for as long as humans have been learning on this planet. Where did they come from? How powerful are thoughts? Have we moved away from this idea that our thoughts and emotions have great power over our lives? Do we really need to control our thoughts, bringing every thought into captivity, as to the Christ? We as Christians are admonished to do so. Is it a principle of living? How does it affect your potential? Do you live in a box of self-limitations, hiding your gifts and light under a bushel? Are you receiving all of the advantages the Bible promises?
What does the Bible say about this idea of the law of attraction? Does the Bible support it? Did Jesus really teach the law of attraction? This study will guide you to the answers to these questions. You will have to dig as for treasure as Christians have been encouraged to do for centuries. But the treasure you will find is far more valuable than all the gold and diamonds in the world: YOUR JOY FILLED LIFE .
PART ONE
Here It Is
CHAPTER I
In Search of Self
The idea of self-actualization (working toward your potential, becoming all you can be) has been around for a very long time. Rhonda Byrnes book and movie, called The Secret, came out in 2006. I perused the site to glean what was offered before I viewed the movie online. Then I watched the movie. It floored me. It was exactly what I had been looking for over the last decades without even realizing it. Some of my deepest questions were answered, some of my deepest fears were challenged. I was in for the most exciting and empowering time of my life which continues today. This became the key to changing my life, and to bring glory to God. But is it true? Can one actually think ones way to the desires of the heart? Can one change their entire life by focusing and imaging? The masters quoted in the film evidently thought so and applied the principles to their lives. They have been successful in achieving the desires of their hearts.
For Christians, the Bible is the ultimate source for guidance, and prayer is the link to God for answers. Jesus taught his disciples to pray to the Father, acknowledging His Sovereignty, praising Him, asking for His Kingdom to come and His will to be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. In Matthew 6:10-13 we ask for daily sustenance and for forgiveness and the will to forgive others. This is a gratitude and intentional prayer. It sets the vision on Gods beneficence, on his Kingdom, and his willingness to provide for his spiritual children. But it also demonstrates a profound faith in the abundance of good for our lives.
As I set about answering the questions about the credibility of the claims in The Secret, my delight and excitement increased with each scripture found. If you have read or seen The Secret, or read anything on the law of attraction (and there are a lot of, programs, conferences, literature, and websites available today that were not available a few years ago) you will be acquainted with the term synchronicity. This happens all the time when you are focused on something. For example, have you ever been thinking of a friend all day, when all of a sudden she/he calls you? Or you are really trying to find answers, and you find a quote in a book youre reading, or hear the exact word or subject on the radio? Have you had this kind of experience with synchronicity? The more you become aware of it, the more it happens. This is what has happened in my search to understand the Christian viewpoint on the Law of Attraction. Scriptures and books blew in to me; I knew the LORD was answering me. The persons featured in The Secret would say the Universe was sending answers to me; by putting out a request by thought and intention, answers were given. Call it LORD, God, Yahweh, Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, quantum physics, or the Universe, it happens. It is the power of thought and focus, the power of intention that makes things happen.
It is my intent to direct you to the greatest words ever said about life, to open your heart to the possibilities that God offers to you as his precious child. This is an amazing adventure that either you already understand, or you are about to begin. Life is meant to be joyful and fulfilling, bringing glory to God. It is your responsibility and pleasure to keep on seeking the good and the abundance and joy of this life.
The very scriptures that my attention has been drawn to for so many years are exactly the ones that have come together to structure this guide. But then, that is the subject of this study: searching for truth, and synchronicity. When the young Pharisee came up to Jesus and asked him which was the greatest of all the commandments, Jesus said: The greatest of them all is to love the LORD your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole mind and your whole vital force. And the second like it is to love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:36-40. Think about this. If you love God, the Creator, with everything you have, all that you are, making him your main focus, all the other 600+ commandments are taken care of. You will love your neighbor and honor him. But the part of this scripture that is often overlooked and is also the hardest, is to love yourself. Jesus said: Love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:39. This is an active and real love of acknowledgement, daily encouragement, and fulfillment of and for yourself in order to fulfill Gods will for you.
Do you love yourself? Do you consider yourself a special child of God? Do you honor and value yourself? Do you live the best life possible? Is it possible to love your neighbor, or to love God, if you dont love yourself? God created you, with your genes, your parents. Do you approve of what God created in you? This may be a hard one; it has been for me for a long time. But to live a life of purpose and contentment we must start with ourselves. One line out of a movie, Jesus Christ, Superstar came right out of scripture, with a fun lyrical sound, that describes what most people have done in their lives. If that light is under a bushel, youve lost something kinda crucial. Does that make sense to you? You must discover your light. Let it shine, so that you light up.
