FOREWORD
There aremany excellent books that deal with the issue of bullying atschool, but not so many that address the traumatic issue ofworkplace bullying. This is one offering that, I trust, will helpsufferers, and their families, to understand what this is about andwhat is does to an individual. Having been the Victim, or Target,of workplace bullying on three occasions, I know the damage it cando to you. My wife and family also had to live with the destructiveeffects of this unacceptable workplace behaviour. It nearlydestroyed me. My health had a serious breakdown, and I was underpsychiatric care for eighteen months. My psychiatrist was on theverge of admitting to psychiatric hospital under the Mental HealthAct for my own safety, because I had become suicidal.
I wasthen working as a lecturer in further and higher education, andtook the opportunity to do my M.Ed. degree. There was only onesubject I was going to research, and that was 'workplace bullying';which I did, and successfully achieved my Masters. I providedsupport services for the Victims of this antisocial behaviour, raninformation and training classes for employers and also forpost-graduate students in Education.
This bookhighlights the nature of workplace bullying, and does so for onevery good reason: once Victims get a handle on what has been doneto them, they are better able to cope with the trauma. It is the'not knowing' aspect of what is going on that really annoys. Onceyou know what it is you are dealing with, you are better equippedto address it, because you then know what it is you areexperiencing.
A numberof really innovative angles on workplace bullying have beenidentified by me as a direct result of my academic research. Theseinclude viewing workplace bullying in term of 'rape' and'abortion.' Never heard this before? Well, read on and get thepicture. Other equally powerful pictures are used to expose thetrue nature of workplace bullying.
As youread on, you will come to discover what the workplace bully reallyis like, and the type of person the Target, or Victim, of thisunacceptable behaviour is.
This bookhas the twin advantages of coming from painful personal experienceand being based on solid academic research. Both together make aformidable team. I hope you benefit from reading and studying it,and get the understanding and relief you need.
CHAPTER1
What isWorkplace Bullying?
In thisopening chapter, an attempt will be made to set out what is meantby bullying and bullying behaviour, especially as it appears inadult life. From one angle, this is not easy, since what may bevery fair treatment to one person, is nothing short of bullying orharassment to another. Similarly, as each individual has adifferent threshold of suffering, both physically andpsychologically, so what is bullying or harassment to one personmay be nothing but harmless fun to another.
Furtherdifficulties arise because of the problems associated with decidingat what point certain behaviour becomes bullying. Normal youthfulbanter becomes bullying when the same person or persons arerepeatedly on the receiving end of negative attention, againsttheir wishes, but they are unable to stop it. Deciding on thelongevity of certain negative and unwanted behaviours constitutesanother problem. Isolated incidents do not demonstrate bullyingbehaviour, but that there is a definite time factor on it - weeks, months and even years - is required for it to be categorised asbullying behaviour. Hence, the difficulty in defining theseterms.
Thatsaid, attempts have been made to arrive at a working understandingof bullying so that when the word is used, what is meant by it isclear.
Onedefinition views bullying in terms of its negative impact on theVictim, and sees it as the negative and damaging treatment ofanother in such a manner that is causes the Target to suffer andfeel humiliated or vulnerable, and which has a detrimental andstressful effect on him/her.
As withharassment, bullying is defined largely by the impact of thebehaviour on the recipient, not its intention.
Bullyingmay therefore be seen primarily in terms of aggression, orlong-standing violence, physical or psychological, emotional orverbal, conducted by an individual or a group, and directed againstan individual who is not able to defend him/herself in the actualsituation.
It isimportant, for the sake of accuracy, that the physical andpsychological aspects of bullying are included in this definition.Bullying is something that goes on repeatedly and increasingly overa period of time, and is not just a one-off act of aggressivebehaviour.
CHAPTER2
What aWorkplace Bully Really Is Like?
Thefollowing paragraphs will maintain that bullies, whether in theworkplace, the community, or in the home, just like alcoholics, areattention-grabbing deceivers whose word cannot be trusted. Theywill be so wonderful at lying that others are 'taken in' by whatthey say. It appears that bullies assume entirely that what theysay is the truth, even if confronted with indications to thecontrary. It is true that one lie requires another to cover it, andso on, until you are embroiled in a complexity that defies escape. They have been so engulfed in difficult or embarrassing situationsof their own making, that, in order to get out of it, resort todeception.
Some ofthese situations are so complex that escaping from them requiresgreat skills. And the trickier it is for them to get out of theirpredicament, the more aggressive they will become. This "survivalinstinct," when utilized by the average person will not be used tocause hurt; but when useful to the workplace 'terrorist,' thereisn't any acknowledgment of the discrepancy concerning what'smorally right and what's morally wrong, the plan being to hurt theTarget, even to the point of seriously damaging his health. Thereis a ruthlessness about bullies that is frightening, and acallousness that is terrifying.
The'modus operandi' of the workplace bully, as they choose the Target,is basically that they, the Targets, are perceived to be dissimilarto the others; this might show itself in their being betterlooking, slower workers, possess superior certificates, well-likedby others both within and outside the workplace, and evensuccessful. The list is vast; if a Target is to be given "thetreatment," then any pretext will do.
