4. THE DESTINATION
Meditation is a natural state of being. Consciously or not, we all experience meditative states from time to time.
The moments when we enjoy our own company, in solitude; when we are pulled into what we might call daydreaming; when we are absorbed in watching natures beautythese are all forms of meditation. The times when we awaken with joy, celebrating the gift of life, or before we fall asleep, feeling cared for, secure, comfortable, and protected. Or when it is raining outside, we are warm and cozy on the inside, and the heart feels gratitudethese also are expressions of meditation. When we hear music and our hearts soar with love and we feel uplifted, that too is a sense of meditation.
The insights in this book describe a more formal and focused approach to meditation than daydreaming or listening to music, but it is still a natural process. The aim is that through understanding, the process should be brought under conscious control so that deeper and potentially life-transforming experiences become systematically available.
There is a need for this focus, because today, for so much of the time, materialism traps our minds.
Earning, spending, and acquiring are all necessary to sustain life, but when they become everything to us, selfishness intensifies and the spirit atrophies. We may then feel that this is how human life has always been and will continue to be, but that need not be so. Meditation nourishes the soul as food nourishes the body. It is vital for each one of us. The journey of life is necessarily a challenge, with obstacles along the way, but it passes more comfortably and constructively when the path of meditation is understood. The journey may be similar, but the experience becomes different. Meditation increases our ability to travel with balance, stability, and peace, much as a good set of tires improves comfort and safety on the roads.
If we are to be successful in meditation, we need the right technique for our particular purposes. Many just want to learn to relax, and there are certainly a number of techniques available in the marketplace that will help people learn how to do that.
Others are looking for greater control over their minds and want to improve their powers of concentration. A popular technique is mantra meditation, in which one is given a holy word or sacred sound for chanting either out loud or silently within the mind. Concentrating in this way can bring feelings of deep peace and contentment. Also, while focusing on the mantra, the mind doesnt have space to run elsewhere, and so worries and anxieties recede.
Meditating on scenes of naturea sunset, a sunrise, a tree, a beautiful vistais another means of nourishing the soul. Almost any aspect of nature can bring us back to a point of calmness and peace because of the beauty and truth nature contains. This beauty soothes and uplifts, and the minds fears and troubles diminish. We feel stronger and more in touch with reality.
Raja Yoga meditation, which underpins the insights shared in this book, is a powerful method for connecting to the positive, nurturing, loving, and strengthening inner aspects of life. The highest source of this inner nourishment is God, and every human soul, as a child of God, has a right to a direct relationship with its parent. The prophets and messengers who founded the great religious traditions indicated that all souls can have this relationship with the Supreme, and the time has now come for us to reclaim that right. The world needs us to do this!
Meditation, accurately directed, makes God accessible to everyone. With meditation, we become better able to make choices that we feel happy with the next day, or the next week, or ten years later. So often on the journey of life, we come to a crossroads and make choices that with hindsight may not be seen as wise. The bumps and twists that follow may be with us long afterward. And yes, we may learn from them as we live with the results of our decisions. But especially in todays condition, when it is difficult to know what the future holds or where it may lie, our choices carry more significance than ever. Our decisions require not only logic and reason but also an appreciation of truth and a sense of intuition.
Raja Yoga meditation is simple in that it doesnt require a mantra, chanting, special postures, or external scenes of beauty. It does, however, have a high aim: becoming self-sovereign, master of the mind and senses. It teaches that there is a natural royalty in us that is capable of bringing strength and beauty into our relationships and behavior. This royalty emerges when we renew our awareness of the inner self, the essence of our being, in relationship with the Supreme.
Raja Yoga offers a meditation that we can carry inside ourselves so that we can practice it not just when were sitting quietly but also as we continue to fulfill our daily tasks and responsibilities.
It allows each of us to get to know God and to love God so that it remains easy for us to remember God no matter what else we may be doing, as lovers remember each other however far apart they may be. The goal is to be able to exercise such a power of choice over our thoughts and feelings as to bring a positive response into any situation, no matter how bad or sad that situation might seem. In a world beset with difficulties, the positivity generated by this creative use of the mind gives our hearts the strength to cope. Amazingly, the feelings of worry, anger, fear, and hopelessness that dominate many peoples lives come to be seen as unnecessary, and hanging on to them is seen as part of the problem. To let go of those negative habits of mind and embrace Gods positive energy becomes a solution in itself.
