1 TIMOTHY 4:12
Leadership: Everyone talks about it, but few people really understand it. Everyone wants it, but few people achieve it. So what is leadership?
Most people would say that leadership is getting a titlelike class president or team captain. They work and work to get the title, and when they do they think they are leaders instantly. But just because someone has the title of a leader, it doesnt mean people will follow him or her.
He who thinketh he leadeth and hath no one following him is only taking a walk.
And then there are some leaders who dont even have a title. Think about certain kids in your class, the ones everyone looks to for how to dress, how to be cool. Or what about the people who may not dress as well, but their quiet intelligence or wit makes everyone want to follow them? Theyre all leaders, too.
So, What Is Leadership?
Leadership is influencethe ability to get people to follow you.
The goal of this journal is to prepare you to be a leader, both now and in the future. Youll look at how you influence others and how others influence you. Youll look at attitudes and problem solving, setting goals, and reaching goals. Youll have to do some thinking about who you are, who you want to be, and where you want to go. But when you reach the end, youll have learned what it takes to be a good leader.
Why Me?
You may be asking why you should learn about leadership. Thats becausein a big way or a small wayyou already are a leader. Everyone is, because everyone influences the people around him. In fact, research has found that you will influence the lives of ten thousand other people in your lifetime. No matter whether youre shy or outgoingten thousand people! The question is how you will influence them. And that is up to you.
Think about the things that have influenced and changed youmaybe just for a day or maybe for your whole life. For example, have you ever had a run-in with a real grouch who just ruined the rest of your day? Or was there a special person who helped you decide that you wanted to be a Christian? Did you ever see a person do something incredible and then say, Thats what I want to do? Influences can be big events, or they can be little, everyday things. Either way, they help to make you who you are.
Write about a big event or a special person who influenced your life.
Write about a little event or a brief encounter with a person who influenced you.
Now, turn it around. Write about an event or person you influenced.
Thats the power of influenceof leadership. You never know who or how much you influence someone. Its a big responsibility. And this journal will help you take it on.
There have been meetings of only a moment which have left impressions for life, for eternity. No one can understand that mysterious thing we call influence...yet... every one of us continually exerts influence, either to heal, to bless, to leave marks of beauty; or to wound, to hurt, to poison, to stain other lives.
J. R. Miller
Making a Difference
The question is not whether you will influence someone. You will influence people. The question is whether you will be a good influence or a bad influence. Will you grow in your leadership skills? The primary goal of this journal is for you to:
Make a difference tomorrow by becoming a better leader today.
How do you want to make a difference?
