This book, and the research it reports, benefited greatly from the assistance of numerous individuals. I would first like to thank my doctoral dissertation committee: my advisor, Ward Goodenough, and the other members of my committee, Sandra Barnes and Kris Hardin. I also want to acknowledge the assistance of Anthony Wallace, my advisor prior to his retirement. During an ethnohistory seminar with him I developed some of the intellectual interests that led to my desire to study education in China. I am especially grateful to two additional readers of my manuscript, Frederick Erickson and Heather Peters. Dr. Erickson and Dr. Peters have supported me over the course of several years from the inception of this project to its completion. My research could not have proceeded without their help.
Scholars at other universities have also been very helpful. Lynn Paine gave generously of her time to discuss research possibilities with me, and it was she who suggested that I seek affiliation with a teacher training university in order to study its affiliated middle school. Heidi Ross shared many insights with me about Chinese education, based on her own ethnographic research at a Chinese middle school. Norma Diamond read a portion of my manuscript and made many valuable comments and suggestions.
Helpfulness is a Chinese virtue, and many Chinese friends gave tirelessly of their time and energy to help me with my study. Huang Shizhe, my language tutor at the University of Pennsylvania, was also the first one to guide me to a better understanding of Chinese culture. My friends, teachers, and students in the People's Republic of China were both the subjects of this study and the study's greatest facilitators. My desire to protect their anonymity prevents me from naming them individually, although I wish that I could thank each one by name.
The financial resources of a number of institutions supported various phases of my research. I would like to acknowledge the National Science Foundation, for a graduate fellowship to support my graduate studies and for a dissertation research grant to support my fieldwork in the People's Republic. I would also like to thank the Wenner-Gren Foundation for a grant to fund my fieldwork. A fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania helped finance my graduate studies. The dissertation year of a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities supported the writing up of my research.
Above all, I am grateful for the encouragement of my family and their enthusiasm for my research. This book is dedicated, with love, to them.
